Barretto Con 3 Vergaras

Here is a late 50's photo of "Manos Duras", Ray Barretto, with Gonzalo Vergara Congas. Mongo had sold Ray the two with the bands. Photo courtesy of JC. En paz descanse, brother Ray.

Omelenko that is a wonderful photo, one for the record thats for sure. Thanks for sharing.
It would be awesome if we knew the wher abouts of these drums and even better, if we had a current picture of them :)

Those must be the ones he had painted and placed his initals on they have the same hardware. Those should be in a museum as well as Joe Cubas set of Vergaras. Great Photograph Thanks for posting it.

Awesome!
Im still in Havana, got to play a 15" Vergara the other day at Joaquins place in El Cerro, sweet drum.
Joaquin is custom making me a set of solid shell tambores out of Almendra, an 11.75" Macho (with Alma) and 13" Hembra, stainless steel traditional hardware, single exterior band, they is the shiznit!! pics to come.....

Ray! What a class act! I notice the skins are installed with the rims quite high and the bands seem to be slipping probably due to the New York weather.

I'll bet for those great Cuban prices too! How are things now over there with e loosening of some of the restrictions in the free market? When I was there in the late 90's and early 2000 it was such a hustle just to get by, find a house, we drove for miles once just to buy aguacate. Incredible!
