Please ... help with head selection

I feel like I'm rolling around in a pile of crap with these drums I just bought. I know that they are not the best thing out there, but they were affordable for me and now I need to make them work out. Performer Series. I bought Skydeeps for them and the quinto and conga aren't too bad (except for ringing) but the Tumba sounds like rumbling.. kind of a low frequency rattle.. hard to describe. The drums are tuned to E, C, G.. nothing out of the ordinary. The conga sings like a canary actually. Questions;

Has anyone else had this combo of drums and heads?
If you were going to put decent heads on these drums, what would you put on them?
Am I tuning them to a pitch that just won't work? I like this combo because the conga seems to like middle C.

I've asked too many questions all ready, but I have no where else to go for advice.. I know of no other conga player in my area and the local stores don't know anything. Thanks.

Not to be a downer but would put good skinheads on those drums. Some cow or mule etc...i had a friend who put mule on aspires and those cheap drums became a joy to play. And performers are better than aspire.
If thats nkt what you want try dampening the heads with tape on the underside...

Good input... not downer. I'm frustrated and I can't afford to spend anymore bad money on these. Thanks!!
