New member saying hello and has some questions.............

Postby Hessel » Wed Feb 01, 2012 7:35 pm

Hello,

I am new on this forum and would like to say hello!
I live in the Netherlands and have been a drummer for quite some years now, but always wanted to be a percussionist. For all kinds of reasons I never started to learn, but that now has changed and I started to take conga lessons.
So I am looking around to gather as much information as I can on conga’s and found this forum and glad I did……………I already learned a lot from you, thank you for that.

But it also raised some questions. The shops over here have little to no congas on the floor, so it is very hard to gather info “hands on”.

What I found on this forum is a very positive attitude towards LP Matador congas, why are these better then say, Classic congas? Is this a price/quality thing or are they just better overall?

I can buy a blue one, but I hate the color and I would like to take the color of, is this possible? Or would I find all kinds of filler and other nasty stuff underneath the paint?

Best regards,
Hessel

Welcome to the forum Hessel . Matador are considered to be a serious workhorse in the congaworld . I have owned some in the past and they are great drums for the price you pay for them . Good quality heads will give you a set of drums for life that could be used for all situations . Giovanni Hidalgo has been seen using them , as has Pedro Martinez and Raul rico , all great players who have no problem using these drums . The difference between them and the classics is the price as far as i am concerned , i have seen better heads on the matador at times so it depends on the drum tbh . As far as colour goes its up to you , but it would be a lot of work to repaint the drum . Search for threads on here about drum refurbishment ... Enjoy .

Thank you very much for your answer.
I looked at the refurbishment posts and although it is doable, I wonder if I have the time to do it.
Although the oil finish that was mentioned in one of the treads, really would be the finish I would like on a conga.
I am going to think this over!

One other question, I really like the traditional rims, this one has the comfort type rim. Is it possible to change the rim without changing the head? Or do I need to change the head also?

Best regards,
Hessel

You can change the rim and the the head should fit just fine , if it dosent you soak the head to make it fit . Conga heads fit any rim be it traditional or comfort .
