I just saw these strange Slingerland congas - bokú style - at Ebay. I know that quite a few people on this board might be interested to see them:

They also have been using those type of drums in Brasil for some years now..with plastic heads..I think, and I could be wrong they call it a Timbau drum in Brasil...but it sounds more like a Djimbe rather than a conga drum..here is a demonstration of it

Oh, I have played one of these in a Brazilian batería once (I think it's written "timbal" and pronounced "timbau"), and will never do it again; I hurt my finger joints badly.

The German company Trixon was offering this type of conga in the sixties, too. I didn't know they were that common. And I never saw a Slingerland conga like these. To me they looked like a curiosity.

Can anyone explain the difference, if any, between boku and ashiko?
