Refinishing ideas

Postby dakest » Thu Mar 15, 2012 12:03 am

I am refinishing these and I need some input on ideas, I thought of doing some art on them or some type of graphics.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Dakest, are these LP Classics?
Why did you decide to sand them?

I ask because I have set that I'd like to change the color and add some graphics.
Did you take off the hardware and sand by hand?
Use a lathe?

One is a LP caliente and the other is a Matador, I am making a custom set, I used paint remover then sanded them with a orbital sander and 80 grit paper to remove the rest of the finish then 100 grit.
The finish was pretty bad, it was chipped and scratched and someone painted them with a brush before.

dakest - what inspires you? specific music? specific musicians? specific culture?

I am inspired by the culture & music of Brazil so I had a shekere made with Brazil colors and etched images from Rio.

I was born in Dominican rep. but always been inspired by Cuban music and their legendary musicians like Tata Guines and Mongo Santamaria.
That is a thought, some afrocuban art could look cool.
Thanks for the input, much appreciated....... 8)

Dakest!

My idea is: put it in black and draw straight or curvy lines down with the glow in the dark paint. Or make that lines like 'years' in wood, so you get some crazy funky cosmic wood look effect...

my 2 cents

If those ar your inspiriations then I would do art work related to those great masters. There are artist that take ictures and make paintings from them its pretty neat

You probably won't get many responses because the vast majority here are purist and probably would do no artwork of any kind on their drums. There are a few here though that like artwork though. Myself I like my drums with a nice finsish and no artwork.

I agree with not putting any artwork on unfinished drums for coating later with polyurethane to protect the artwork. I had a pair of LP Valje bongos that I had completely stripped off the original varnish and the only thing I did was re-draw the script styled Valje Signature logo because the stripper I had used completely melted the plastic transparent Valje logo right off. FYI....Siempre Pa'lante y Nunca Patras.

The Valjes I once owned and refinished with the Valje logo drawn by myself and protected with Polyurethane coating.

you could do a "Before and After" portrait of Christopher Columbus...........Just kidding!

On the serious side: maybe you could play them for a while without finishing them and see what visions come to you while riffing out in the conga universe; or, since you're Dominican originally, how about a theme related to Merengue, that rhythm was created there.
