Skin on Matadors

I recently got some second hand matadors. Quinto and tumba. The quinto has a synthetic lp head. I have a remo Nuskyn that happens to fit. I also have some African cow hide. If I go with hide, should I go for thinner or thicker section. Also, anyone know how the remo heads stack up with the LP ?

Is an trial and error process for the most part when you are dealing with drum heads
and also what you like. Do a search in this forum because there are volumes written
on the subject here.

I went ahead with the remo NuSkyn cause it was there and easy. :) It was way thicker than the LP skin that came off it. I didn't play the LP all that long, maybe a day or so, but when I was tuning it up, I was having trouble keeping the tone consistant, so I thought I'd bring it all the way down and start from zero. Then I noticed that the 'ring' on the lp head was warped and bent. I've got it tuned up to quinto, but I think it sounds better closer to conga pitch... which is actually pretty good cause my other drum is a tumba. I'll keep playing with it, but I have a feeling that African cow I have will be going on the drum soon enough. :)
