LP Classics/Cosmic Percussion

I went back and reread the post comparing CPs to LPs, but most of the comparisons were to Matadors. Most seem to conclude that the Matadors were superior to the CPs. OK, so I have a few questions concerning CPs compared to LP Classics. I'm not referring to the new CPs, I'm talking about the ones that look just like the Classics only with traditional crowns. If I'm missing something here, please enlighten me as I want to learn. The two drums are both 30", I know there are some 28" CPs as well as 28" LP Salsas, They are both made out of Siam Oak (rubberwood), CPs have traditional crowns whereas Classics have Comfort-Curve crowns. The badges are different as are the stamps on the heads. The heads might be some different, but you really can't count that as that is a variable. So, really, what is/are the difference between CPs and Classics. Are the shells better made, is the hardware better? Like I said, I'm learning. Also, I don't know about pre-LP or post-LP CPs so if you could explain how to distinguish the two, I would appreciate that as well. Thanks, TT

CP's are a 'children's level" line of conga drum...you need an LP Matador or something similar or better...LP Classics are 28 inch tall and are made primarily for sitting down, and is an older model of LP, either in wood or fiberglass..I am in favor of the LP Classics models in fiberglass...they sound great!...

TT PLease email me at johnnyconga@live.com... I believe I had sent a couple of emails to you but u never got back to me..Tks...JC

LP Orginal Congas (fiberglass) 28" tall

LP Classic Congas (wood) 30" tall

LP Salsa Congas (wood) 28" tall

I think Torpedo is referring to the original Cosmic Percussion congas like these:

To me the main difference between the original CP's and the regular LP's
is the shape of the shells. The CP's are more sleek/taper the regular LP's
are more barrel like. Also the head CP's head sizes were 11" for conga/quinto
and 12" for the tumbadora. Hardware gauge seems to be about the same.
I hope this helps.

What effect does the sleeker shape have on the sound as opposed to the fatter body? Probably less bass sound, but maybe crisper slaps? Thanks, TT

To tell you the truth and not wanting to bullshit you, for the most part I
have never concerned myself with those intricacies. I know with practice
and proper technique you can get awesome bass and slaps from just about
any drum you play.I always subscribe to the concept that is the indian not
the arrow. Back in the day some of them players only played with one tacked
head conga and they got all the open tones, slaps, bass, muffled tones etc
from it. One time you get a drum you are happy with and hopefully of
professional quality is all up to you,how good you want to sound on it.
I hope this helps, my honest two cents.

To your point....

At the Raices Profundos after concert Rumba party last year in SF, Piri got exited and wanted to express himself but all the drums were taken.

He proceeded to turn a coffee table on it's side and played the sh*t out of it. 8)

Some of the orginal cajones used in Cuba for rumba were really fish crates. I mean they used
frying pans, cowbells, gourds, donkey jaws, caña brava (bamboo),etc very rustic and at the
same time organic instruments but the rhythms they played on them instruments have travel
very well around the globe and put to dance millions..............

Jaisen, those drums look awesome with those heads.
I just happened to have bought such an old skool vintage CP as a beater requinto,
a red 10" one. Hmm, perhaps such a new skin would be nice
P.S.: PM sent, Jaisen ...

Jaisen, were all CPs with these badges made in Palisade Park, or were some CP drums with these badges made elsewhere? My requinto and quinto have these badges.

Actually I do NOT think that those drums were from Palisades Park times.
AFAIK, from the early the 1980s Cosmic Percussion produced
fine congas in conjuntion with LP :

And here is another thread about those often underrated Cosmic Percussion
which are the real McCoy - as opposed to the later kid stuff with cheap hardware and lousy skins.

FYI my CP to come looks like this:
