LP classics are 30 inches tall and have fiberglass reinforcement in the shell where the plates attach. The shape is different than the old CP's

That is surely right, of course LP Classics and CP are different drums,
I only wanted to point out that the earlier CP models also stand 30" tall
and feature decent LP hardware, hence they differ vastly from the later,
smaller, inferior cheapos under the same name (CP).

I am still not sure how old the oldest Cosmic Percussion congas are though,
I tend to believe they were not produced in Cohen´s Palisades Park times
in Thailand, but only later.

Anyone to unravel the mystery of CP history?

I just happened to have bought such an old skool vintage CP as a beater requinto,
a red 10" one. Hmm, perhaps such a new skin would be nice
P.S.: PM sent, Jaisen ...

Jaisen, were all CPs with these badges made in Palisade Park, or were some CP drums with these badges made elsewhere? My requinto and quinto have these badges.

not really sure , I always been a fan of lp , but just not a huge fan.

Received my red CP "conga" today. WOW, quite amazing, how well-built
that 10.5" drum is, with the hardware just as sturdy as ´normal´ LP congas!
The shell was made (or the drum assembled) in 1995 and inside is written CP 265B.
FYI, the black badge says "CP presented by LP,Garfield".

Sounds quite nice even with the original head on.

A really cool drum to be honest 8)

I'd like to know also. As far as I know, except for maybe some prototypes, LP never made any wood congas in the US. Everything that says "Garfield, New Jersey" was made in Thailand. When LP moved production overseas all wood congas were first made of rubber plywood. Then came a few AP/Valje cherrywood and later oak & ash Gios and some beech bongos.

But I have an old Cosmic Percussion bongo made of some exotic hardwood - looks like a cross between mahogany and zebrawood. Top notch hardware too. No idea where or when it was made (pictures later - traveling now).

I know the bongos you are talking about, in my opinion they are made of pau ferro/bolivian rosewood.
See the photo of the guitar body parts made of pau ferro. Indeed exotic.

I think you are right the rubberwood/thai oak congas seems to me were the first
production wood congas LP made. I know back in the day LP even made some fiberglass
congas that looked like wood.

Not necessarily a bad thing at all btw, as that wood is very stable.

Wood fiberglass? Some how weird, here is how they look(ed) like:
viewtopic.php?f=36&t=8445&p=78332&hilit=LP+fiberglass+with+wood+finish#p78257
Somwhat odd, if you ask me.

Back to CP: My conga seems to bear the same number as the LP equivalent, CP 265B equals an LP 265B conga,
only that the CP is a two-ply stave if I looked correctly. Again, the hardware is impeccable, heavy LP duty! 8)
Made in Thailand of course and CP stamped on every hardware item. It is really time to revise my previous
preconceptions about that particular conga line. Of course the later kids´drums are crap, we all know that.

FYI, after a few days of playing that sweet red drum, I have decided to keep
the original skin on! It´s really incredible how well this CP conga plays, that
will be my first water buffalo skin that has survived the scrutiny of my ears.

Greetings Mike. I knew that you would be satisfyed with that CP. You really can't go wrong with a classic CP. I've had my set for a couple of years now, still with original heads and still going strong. Their sound and craftsmanship continues to impress me.
I found a set for a good friend of mine, with original skins as well, and he is very happy with them also.

This is a picture of mine after I re finished them. They too started out Red.

What a fantastic refinishing job,
that set of yours looks awesome
and I bet it sound exactly as great
as my 10" Requinto. Oh my, perhaps I will refinish
that red drum in natural wood as well.

And what a contrast those "real" CPs are compared to their less than mediocre continuation. THey come in many different
horrible configurations
à la http://www.ebay.de/itm/conga-set-mit-St ... 27d2f95e84
or http://bathurst.kijiji.ca/c-ViewAdLarge ... =467271770
or even http://kleinanzeigen.ebay.de/anzeigen/s ... ref=search
Amazing how much people ask for that crap.
But those children toy drums surely do sound fantastic, don´t they, especially when played by a real expert :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bXjTjVL0g4
