After having replaced the "sea elephant" with something
thinner, the tumba is great:

Not to mention it was a picknick to mount the thinner hide
compared to fighting the beast you can see in the first picture here...

Well, I think I have a great candidate to post here.. It is a head I removed from a 9 inch, Yes, that is correct, a 9 inch Requinto. As you can see from the pics, the edge of the skin is approximately 1/4" thick, and on the underneath side it appears as if someone took a sharp instrument and sliced into it in several locations. The skin is so thick that this did not affect the playing surface. I had Manito make me a new Flesh hoop and I will be mounting a skin from Jaisen in the next few days or so.
p.s... The bearing edge on this head is so hard I could probably kill someone with it. haha.

Nice one TheBreeze

Here's a pic of the head that came on my isla requinto - just shy of a 1/4 inch as well. After reading this thread, I'm thinking the drum may have a better voice with a thinner I haven't discovered yet. I'll need another flesh hoop though as I don't want to waste this head in case I'm wrong.

I am not reusing the existing flesh hoop either, but mainly because mine does not have a uniform fit around the crown. I think the original flesh hoop that is currently in the skin is too small. The one I just got from Manito is perfect in size as per my measurements I sent him. Another thing I was a little worried about is stressing the bearing edge with that thick skin.

Hey Breeze,

I think I recognize that head from the requinto :D Let me know once you've put the new skins on the requinto. I want to hear it :P

I will keep you posted conganalu. I think I could still use that head as a Hembra for some Bongos?? haha.
I'll let you know how the new head sounds. The funny thing about the old head is that as thick as it is it sounded really good, nice easy pops, and very dry . If I can get a new thinner skin to sound as nice as this thick one does I will be a " Happy Camper".

Whoa, that is a candidate for sure

Reminds me of the thick 5.5mm (almost 1/4") original mule skin I had on my Delaporte 9.75" Superquinto, that skins was playable alright, but too thick for my liking.

The slaps really hurt though, so that is why I replaced it with a 3.5mm polymer cow skin a while ago, by Banux,

Hey Mike !

Yes, the skin I put on that quinto was the thickest I have ever put on a drum.. around 8 to 10mm thick...

Honestly, I think it's too much, it's very stressfull for the drum.

Good stuff : natural slap, mat and short sound (if you like that).

Not good stuff : short sound (if you don't like), pretty hard to play.

congalou,,,that skin is so thick that there is no definition at all to the bearing edge. I guess more is not always good.

I found a good use for the thick skin I took off that drum I have.

If you live in a sunny and dry climate, that is fine,
but I would not want to imagine what that skin looks
and smells like after a long andwet winter outside...

It was done as a joke. I only did it to take the picture. I will soon have a new skin on it. I just recieved some from Jaisen and the one going on the 9" requinto is about 2.5 mm. I think it will work perfect.
