Hello everybody,

I'm just a young buck and I wasn't around when the movie "Our Latin Thing" was released by a small record label called Vampisoul at http://www.vampisoul.com/shop/en-us/dept_8.html. Well, I just found out that it was just released on dvd. Can anyone give a review? Is it worth the $30 price? There is also another movie titled "Salsa". Which one should I get first?

Thank You

I was actually at the "Cheetah" Nightclub in NYC, when they filmed for "Our Latin Thing", which was with the Fania All Stars and a kinda inner city history of Latin music in NY at the time. "Salsa" which I haven't seen in 30 years, came after Our Latin Thing. It's worth the price to me. But check with Descarga.com first it might be cheaper......WELCOME Drum Brother to our family here....."JC" Johnny Conga... :;):

'Our latin thing' is worth the money, the production is excellent, charming 70`style with yellow-shaded pictures and everything. I know there also is a video called Fania in Africa, that I`d like to see, have you seen that one Johnny?

For those who want to get an important piece of the developmen of the salsa genre, the movie "Our Latin Thing" is a must have....This is the "documentation" of the live recording at Cheetah, that change the course of the genre. After that Fania Records and its artists made history and was the beginning of the great 70s for the salsa genre.

Salsa is the documentation of the "Live at Yankee Stadium" albums by Fania All-Stars. Recorded in Yankee Stadium and in Puerto Rico's then new Roberto Clemente Coliseum... The album Live at Yankee Stadium by Fania All-Stars was selected by the US Congress as a landmark record because it was the first time a latin music genre did that kind of venue. The Salsa movie, and the soundtrack for the record that does not have the same music as the Live at Yankee Stadium Albums, have el Gran Combo, and the Congo-Bongo songs with the "mano a a mano" by Ray Barreto and Mongo Santamaria...That's is just worth having...

If you ask me, get them both....

Saludos!

I was also at Yankee Stadium for the "LIVE" recording with 40,000 people when Ray and Mongo went at it...it was a GREAT night of music. Mongo also released "Live at Yankee Stadium" The Fania All Stars in Africa I saw when it first came out if that is the one that also had Santana and James Brown in it. Raymond, I performed at Shea Stadium in 1972 for the Ist International Pop Festival with a Latin band called "Rosetta Stone" but we were never considered part of the Latin music scene, though we were considered the East Coast Santana type band...there was also "El Teatro de Puerto Rico" in the South Bronx that had a lot of music perfomances with Latin bands from Puerto Rico, but never recognized, or saved as far as I know......"JC" Johnny Conga.... :;):

JC,

You know how it is, in this case is who has "their marketing or promo" going on..That was the case of the Fania All Stars

..Anyway, for those who do not know, I've heard that the Yankee Stadium concert by Fania All Stars was never completed because the crowd sitting in the stands "charged" towards the stage and the concert was ended. They say that is the reason the Live At Yankee Stadium has songs that were actually recorded in Puerto Rico during the same tour....

Well as I said "I was there" and the reason why the people charged the stage, (which was on 2nd base, and the people were in the stands)...was because of One person...La YI YI YI-La Lupe....she started singing and ripping off her blouse cantando pa Chango and everybody went nuts and charged the stage, I was one of them, and that is the truth. Then the Policed the show to get everyone off the field, too many people on the inside of the diamond and messed it all up. But it was great show and it was the end as far as anybody knew. I don't remember anybody to come on after La Lupe.....and then they went to Puerto Rico..."JC" Johnny Conga.... :;):

The "FAS In Africa" film edited by Fania that I have, do not have James Brown nor Santana, is only FAS. I think now the film is known now as "Celia and FAS In Africa". It was shot during Muhammad Ali and George Foreman legendary fight Rumble in the Jungle in Zaire 1974.

Your info is very interesting and different than the accounts I have read and heard. Those accounts have the "#### break loose" situation taking place during the Congo-Bongo tune, the duel between Mongo and Barretto. Which takes me to according to many what you hear in the 2 "FAS At Yankee Stadium" albums is not actually the performance at Yankee Stadium but the concert in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Yea the people went "nuts" during the duel between Ray and Mongo , but believe me anybody that was there will tell you it was La Lupe that did it....the other video Im talking about has Santana-James Brown and others. It was in 1971 when they went on an African tour. It is now out on DVD, but I can't remember the name of it...... :( "JC" Johnny Conga...
