WOW..what a memory >>I WAS THERE AT YANKEE STADIUM THAT NIGHT..I will never forget it ...that "duel" is classic and THE ONLY one that I have ever seen between 2 GREAT players..though when Armando Peraza was touring with Mongo, they didn't "duke it out"....but played along side each other...man what a night that was ...it created a small riot and people ran from the stands and on to the field of play, which eventually caused the concert to end kinda abruptly...but what you are seeing is 2 great players in their prime....Mongo still excites the SHIT! out me and i guess he always will....I miss him, he was a dear friend and mentor...

Yo Johnny,
He's from the South Bronx...a born and bred NYCer. I've seen him live a few times, he is a monster. Along with his conga skills, he's a trained jazz drummer with total independence, sort of a El Negro of congas. Check out his stuff with Screaming Headless Torsos, ripping funk/rock stuff. I"m very influenced by his work with this band, its sort of what I'm trying to do with my band, Urban Sun. Of course, not in the same league as him!

Peace out

AAAAhhhhh a "homey"...I keep telling people that u don't need to go to Cuba ..CUBA IS IN THE HOUSE-BRONX!!!...I came off the same streets of the South Bronx jamming at "people's park", Crotona, St.Anne's ave....Willis ave....St.James park-Fordham rd.....even jammed at the fringe of the Bronx Zoo over on 174th...we jammed in Jerome ave. park and 167th...and let me not forget Section 1 at Orchard Beach.....man those were the days.....so if you want to "really" Rumba ...go to the Bronx or Central Park by the lake off of 72nd , on a sunday afternoon and gaurenteed this summer you will see some "hellafied" Rumba there....with "DA BRONX" in my Heart.. :D ..."JC" Johnny Conga....

Now after seeing the whole video of the Mongo Ray duel ..u can see all the people in front of the stage and then someone comes out on stage and waves his hands to STOP THE SHOW!!....there were 40,000 of us on the playing field, and the grounds couldnt handle that amount of people....the stage was set up on 2nd base of the diamond...so when Mongo and Ray started going at it, WE(the fans) WENT CRAZY and Charged onto the field towards the stage....if it was clearer I might be able to see my face right down front of the stage where i was back in 1974...."JC" Johnny Conga... :D

A lot of my first "real" teachers were from the bronx, skip and Abey, pepe. However, after having been to Cuba twice, it's not the same. The style is definitely different , and in Cuba, the culture is so much more present and alive!. Plus Cuba is just Cuba, I don't think there's another city n the planet quite like Havana. Definitely there have been countless badasses from NYC and particularly the Bronx, pero Cuba es la cuna, and if you want to really surround yourself and absorb the roots, I don't think you can find another place to do it.

No doubt they be jammin. Skip, as crazy as he is , is a great teacher, I got stuff from him on tape, abaqua, makuta, yuka, on and on, havana style, matanzas style, he has soooo much knowledge, and can communicate in a way that people who grew up on the other side ( western) can really understand.
