Hola congueros,
I'm always in search of some hard core rumba music. Currently I picked up Totico Y Sus Rumberos with Jerry Gonzalez on quinto (among others) and it is a smoker!

Some of my favorites from my collection are:
-Guaperia Rumbera (Bata Records)
-Daniel Ponce's Rumba Pa' Gozar
-Cachete Maldonado Y Los Majaderos
-Ahora Vengo Con Rumba (Joaquin Pozo)
-Rumba Caliente (Muñequitos De Matanzas)
-Patato Y Totico
-Rumboleros (Protesta Carabali)
-Afro Roots (Mongo)

What are some of your favorite rumba CDs?

2. Yoruba Andabo: Callejon de los Rumberos

3. Grupo Afrocubano de Alberto Zayas con Roberto Maza: El Yambu de los Barrios (Giraldo Rodriguez on quinto)

4. Conjunto Guaguanco Matancero y Los Papines: Guaguanco

5. Rapsodia Rumbera (Aspirina, Tata, Pancho Quinto on quinto)

6. Tata Guines: Aniversario

7. Pancho Quinto: El Solar de la Cueva del Humo

8. Muñequitos: Rumba Caliente 88/77 (El Goyo on tumbador)

9. Clave y Guaguanco: Cantaremos y Bailaremos (Songs & Dances) (Alejandro Pujols on quinto)

10. Cuba en Washington (Afrocuba de Matanzas first 3 songs, Regalao on quinto)

11. Muñequitos: Rumba de Corazon (Eddie Espinosa on tumbador)

12. Pello el Afrokan: Un Sabor que Canta (more Mozambique than rumba)

13. Rumberos de Cuba: Y donde andabas tu acereko? (Mario Jauregui Aspirina y Maximino Duquesne on quinto)

While i'm not a hardcore rumbero, I do appreciate Rumba Caliente by Los Munequitos de Matanzas, and anything by Los Papines. Mongo Santamaria's Afro Roots album also has quite a bit of rumba on it. (real raw old school stuff).

Sakuntu,
I couldn't agree more, Rumba Caliente is my fav from Muñequitos and Afro Roots is a must have.

Jorge/Ralph,
You guys are cookin! Man, there's some stuff in your lists that I definitely need to hunt down.

Windhorse,
You totally reminded me about Vacunao from Muñequitos. I don't have it but have been meaning to get it, thanks.

Can anyone of you recommend a rumba CD that's un poco seco? (minimal chants) Great stuff guys, please keep 'em coming!

Hi afrocubarico!

I don't know if these qualify as rumba CDs but they have much instrumental stuff and are some of my favorites:

"Hands of Rhythm" - Giovanni Hidalgo

"Unfinished Masterpiece" - Eddie Palmieri
(the track titled "Cobarde" is most all instrumental and just wild)

"Palo Pa Rumba" - Eddie Palmieri

"Solito" - Eddie Palmieri

"Superimposition" - Eddie Palmieri

(these have vocals but instrumental pieces also, especially "Superimposition").

Hope this helps!

Oh, I forgot to mention "Vortex", a more recent one by Eddie Palmieri, with no vocals, but some incredible playing.

Afrocubarico, please give my regards to "da Bronx" - my grandmom lived there, so did I for a short time as a small kid, and my dad played upright bass at older dance clubs there that may exist no longer... he said that they usually had two bands switching off each night in those clubs, mostly around Hunt's Point ave... the "Swing band" and the "Latin band" - he would often work with both. My best high school buddy, Dave Ortiz, lived on Stratford ave... I used to be around there quite a bit.

Enjoy the Rumba!

rumberos de cuba!! those guys are the one band today playing real rumba in habana...

yoruba andabo has great cd´s, but they are kind of "cojos" playing life...

the singer in rumberos de cuba is a real institution of rumba in cuba... Ernesto "El Gato" Gatell... his also de singer in lots of songs of tata guines and his is "fundador" de clave y guaguanco... lazaro rizo and maximino duqusne also used to play with tata... and well, what can anyone say about aspirina? that guy rocks de stage...

rumberos are finishing a second album, with no name yet, but it will come out in cuba around august...

and well my favorites will be muñequitos, tata guines, rumba profunda (no tradicional rumba, but more with contempo arregments, like the use of saxofon, bateria and bajo), papines, clave y guaguanco, mongo is a real master, but i dont think is the real rumba... anyway still is great...

also im looking for several cd´s where "el Gato" sings...

-clave y guaguanco, songs and dances
-afrekete
-hilario duran, killer tumbao (jazz)
-rapsodia rumbera

that´s all i can remember right now...

nos vemos
VIVA MEXICATIAHUI!!!
