Just a note to let everyone know that earthcds & Middle Path Media has just released a 3 CD set of Afro-Cuban Batá from Havana, Cuba. This is the real deal!
Here's a description:
In this three CD box set, the late great Andrés Chacón plays Lukumi, Abakua and Arara styles with his group Iré Iré. Recorded live at his home in La Havana, Cuba 2001. A bilingual (English & Spanish) 28 page full color booklet with notes, interviews (with Andrés Chacón) and photos is included!
Andrés Chacón Franquiz “Pogolotti” was born on the outskirts of Havana near the Toledo sugar factory. Andrés learned from the master drummers of his day — many of them raised by grandparents born in Africa — who in turn had learned from earlier masters. Because of his devotion and talents, Andrés came to master many drumming traditions, a role that includes the process of drum-making beginning with the ritual felling of specific trees. As a teacher, he became a conduit for the transmission of this lore to future generations. Several of the major traditions performed by the “school” of Andrés are found on this CD, giving listeners a rare glimpse into living spiritual traditions with direct links to Mother Africa.
