Hello, Im living in Japan and I was wondering if anyone may know of a teacher for the congas here. Or do I have to get back to the books? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for any help you can give.

I am sure if you can find the Musical Director of the band formally known as Orchestra La Luz, that he is either teaching or knows who is. From what I know there are at least 30 Japanese Salsa bands in Japan. La Luz was the most famous.....I just don't remember his name.....Hope this helps..."JC" Johnny Conga....

Gaijin,

A friend of mine just moved there as well - Christian is his name. He is an excellent Drummer/Percussionist. Although congas are not his specialty - he will definitley be able to give you the mental tools to work on independence. He moved there last month his wife will soon follow - check out their website:

Christian

Hang on a sec and I will find his contact info in Japan.

Ivan

If you can get to Kyoto, a visit to Gateway music will really be worth your while. It's a drum shop largely dedicated to latin percussion. Lots of both new and used equipment in stock and the manager, Murata-san, is an aficionado of Salsa. He gives lessons on latin percussion and has made several study trips to Cuba. Also, he knows of all the major Japanese (and foreign) players in the area and can direct you to teachers.
