I am a drumset player with 25 years under my belt. I have always been into latin music and percussion but recently got the urge to learn from a real teacher instead of trying to copy everything by ear. Can anyone recommend an authentic latin percussion teacher in the suburban NY/NJ area? I live in Rockland County NY, about 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge and about 15 from the NJ border. Any help would be appreciated...Thanks

If you can take a drive to the Bronx for lessons
I can hook you up with a great teacher -
Nicky Marrero ( alumni of Fania All-Stars, Eddie Palmieri,
Larry Harlow...) one of the giants of the Timbales
and also plays a mean set of bongos and congas.
..you also call me... and I'lll get you his contact info.

Hey I'm with Trac. I am in search of an affordable teacher as well. I know very basic technique and would like to develop some more. I live on LI so any borough is accessible. If there's anyone in mind, please let me know.

Thanks

Guys,

Check out the following link:

Harbor Conservatory of Performing Arts

Many great percussion instructors there.

Hope this helps!

Isaac: Nicky Marrero???!!!!! Wow!! In my humble opinion there is no better timbalero out there! (I still think his solo on Willie Colon's "The Hustler" is the epitome of the true soul of the timbales)

Would you have any objection to my E-mailing you for his contact information?

Hi Johnny,
I don't know him, although I've heard his name before.
I've just checked out his myspace. Very impressive.
There's a bunch of great teacher at the
Harbor Conservatory:

PERCUSSION
JOSE MADERA (Latin percussion)
GEORGE DELGADO (Latin percussion)
GREG ASKEW (drum set / folkloric percussion)
JOHNNY ALMENDRA (drum set / Latin percussion)
JOHN BERDEGUER (Latin percussion)
MAURICIO HERRERA (Latin percission & drum set )

This list is not the latest, and they've added some
new teachers.
