christian@latimbala.comThis workshop will concentrate on teaching all the percussion parts for contemporary Conga Habanera, in the conga/jirivilla style popular in Havana, and traditional Mozambique in the original form created by Pello el Afrokan. It is open to anyone with experience of any type of group percussion music. It is not suitable for complete beginners. Those with an interest in Afro Cuban music will particularly benefit from the group work and the guidance for developing stamina and technique on the various instruments which include cowbells, tumbadoras (congas) and bombos (bass drums).
Christian Weaver has performed with the Havana comparsa Los Componedores de Batea since 1997, being the first and only foreigner to hold this position. He was also a student of the late Pello el Afrokan, the inventor of the Mozambique style of carnival music. He has worked extensively teaching and performing both styles with his group Orquesta Timbala.
