Thank Laurent, we can always count on You!
Well, You are for sure more experienced than me in this sort of things... I suppose that people are expecting from "Tips from the Pros" to receive from Professionals Musicians advices, tips, feeling, secrets techinques and any other things like that....

We can work together (pros and non pros) on the special forum i've created to define all this steps and purposes..

Have you ever written for a magazine?

Well we have Simon B who is offering his help for that (english teacher!)...

May be we can also find someone offering help to translate your "Tips" from French to English so You will not have to use Your english at all ....

I hope other non-pros like me will understand the value of the stuff you, and other pros, are going to provide us with... so I'm expecting from other members of this forum, or just other CongaPlace visitors, a great partecipation and support to the project...

By the way, I was looking the LP site (www.lpmusic.com) where there is a Section called "Play like a Pro" ... I think this is probably a good example to look at...

Talk to you later ....
Bye for now

There's a lot of stuff needed. I'm going to submit, in the posting you're reading now, 3 things: I. Bongo Boy's thoughts on specific content, and recommendations for initial CongaZine content, with exhaustively boring rationale, II. Recommendations for the associated processes and software requirements, and III. Tasks that I think need to be done to get started that savvy web-meisters might be able to get done very quickly.

Here goes--my apologies for the length.

I. Content

A. Upcoming Shows.--HOLD FOR LATER. This may be something you open up to the planet--anyone can make a submission. I'd recommend this come later because you'll want to use an online form for the submissions with certain fields mandatory and verifiable. Some fields will simply have to be mandatory and selectable from a pick-list to automate management (show dates, for example, so that the posting can be auto-archived or auto-deleted). SO, I vote for saving this one for later. I have some design ideas tho.

B. ProTips. DO THIS ONE NOW. In Section II. Processes (below), I have some thoughts on how to handle this.

C. In the News. These are the little short, one- or two-liners about new products, announcements of any kind, etc. I can't imagine who would submit them or verify them, but maybe verification isn't necessary.

D. Reviews. Product, recording, show, book and video reviews submitted by anyone who chooses to.

II. Processes.

In general, I think someone has to decide that all submissions either a) become the sole property of CongaPlace with all international rights reserved, and all submitters must agree to that in writing, or b) the submitters of any materials will all be the implied copyright owners. I don't think it's in the site's best interest to leave this unresolved.

I general, if an editor is asked (or volunteers) to edit material, the author should be unknown to that editor, at least until the piece is published. Likewise, the editor should remain unknown to the author. This means an intermediary may be needed from time to time--that could be a mess.

A. ProTips. From the submitter's point of view, it would be nice if they could simply write an email or fill out a free-form online text box such as the one I'm using to write this. It would be great if at least one volunteer editor could get an automated email when the submission was made--that editor's job would be to correct any obvious spelling or typographical errors. Often, people who don't write for a living will put everything in one big solid block of text, and an editor can improve readability without having to change everything (thereby insulting the submitter).

It would be wonderful if the submitter be asked to categorize his/her Tip using one of, say, 4 to 8 categories. This helps ensure that we have variety in the category of Tips. Categories might include: Practice, Performance, Equipment, Going Pro, and so on.

C. In the News. Using an online form, anyone can submit an In the News Item. They have to be a registered and logged-on CongaPlace Forum user, they have to select a category (this helps submitters focus on what their ranting about), an information source (preferably with a valid URL), and the submission is limited to, say, 60 or so words. Intended to provide a reference to the full story, not the full story itself.

D. Reviews. The CongaPlace site will provide a short "Writer's Guide" that provides guidelines on how to write a review, for example, including minimum and maximum length and what's needed for the author's bio. Again, it would be great if a few folks volunteered to be copy editors, just to help ensure clarity and tidiness of the submission.

Here's an idea: using a standard online 'voting' tool, open a poll each month (or each quarter) to allow CongaPlace members to vote on their review topic of choice--or even have them do this by voting from among a number of review 'abstracts' that have been submitted (anonymous authors until the review is published).

III. Tasks. Find, evaluate or select simple online tools that will work to implement at least some of the simplest ideas above. I have no idea what's available or how this can be done.

FINALLY, don't EVER let anyone submit a post that's this long :D

:D Whew, ooooooeeey!.You have a lot to say my man, but it's all good. When does the Mag hit the stands? No good ideas really. Here is another one,we might want to add..."On the Road",with so and so. for example I am going to Seattle next week to spend a month there to lay the ground work for my re-location,but I will be and already locked into the Gig scene. 2 bands I will be performing with is Rumba Abierta and Quimbara. So I will be "On the Road" or "On the Scene",take your pick,I'll leave that up to you guys. A daily Diary of my goings on inside the Seattle Music Scene. We could have that from anyone of us actually that is On there own Scene too,and gigging with different bands. Lot of talk today amonst musicians is where is the best place for them to be to be functioning in there Craft. Makes for good conversation and controversy. Whatever you ever wanted to know about Miami, I *^&$ sure could tella ya. Back to the West coast I go! the NorthWest. Peace and Congas.......At your Service...JC JOHNNY CONGA.... ;)

See, that would be a great story. I'd rather hear stories, lessons learned, practical and whimsical, that don't restrict a column to just "tips'. Also, it would be just as good to hear from folks who perform regularly, even if they don't make their living that way (there are a lot of performing artists who are considered top shelf, but who have kept their day jobs).

I like the On the Road title, "On Stage" might even suggest a broader coverage (anything by anyone who performs live). OR, "Stage and Studio" would cover recording, making demos, how to go pro, etc.

These ideas would also relieve the writer from having to feel obligated to come up with a specific "tip", which could get to be a pain in the butt after a short while. I like JC's idea.

Why don't we start by tooling around the web looking at other online zines that we feel could serve as good, simple starting points. Post the URLs here, and go from there.

Does anyone know what software is needed to allow us to do some of these things? I don't, sorry to say.

Hi there,
and thanks JC and BongoBoy for the interesting posts... lot of good ideas... One of the best site we can look at as a very good example is Percussions.org ... it contains calendar events, interviews, articles, music archive and a lot of other good stuff.

I can manage to organize the software part of the job but any help from php/mysql/html programmer would be very appreciated!!

To start we have to concentrate deeply into each single "idea" we want to put into practice (Tips from the Pros, On the road ecc..), so I suggest to create new topics and move the discussion there (Tips and Workshops topics have already been created)...

Great. This may seem painful, but we are making progress. A lot less work (and re-work) if extra time is spent noodling these ideas around now. You've just broken the project down into more manageable pieces--that's important.

Hello Everyone,

This is great news! First and most, we must support the places who offer a venue for conga players, as in the case of "La Esquina Habanera" in New Jersey and "Rumba on 6" in Miami, Florida. Then, make sure to mention and keep updates of events, seminars, congueros, conga teachers in the USA and articles on "who is who" as far as styles are concerned. Mention the genres, the manufacturers of great conga drums around the World, interviews with great congueros. For example, at my "Rumba on 6" venue we feature Cuban Tradional Rumba (Guaguancó, Columbia, Yambú) and Yoruba. We feature Daniel Ponce and his group ACHéCaribe with Lazaro "Tato" Alfonso on the quinto. Tato was the founding member conguero of the Irakere. We have featured many times our friends Johnny Conga, Miguel Cruz, El Negro Raymat,
and this weekend in our end of the night "descargas" we had Rafael, Gregorio and Luis Enrrique, jamming at the place. "La Esquina Habanera" features their own list of great congueros.
Find out what other places around the country and abroad does the same and post it.

I can inteview some of these guys and ask them key questions for the readers. Do the same and collaborate. Photograph the jams or the individuals,
record some of the jams on video or DAT. Great for an on-line magazine.

These are my tips, I hope they would serve a purpose.

See you at the Rumba,

Hi guys.....Well Franc , if all goes well my New invention will be on the market in a few months time and you won't have to worry about your neighbors anymore. I have just received my "provisional patent" for my invention and have a company online ready to manufacture , distribute and sell my item. so hang in there. As far as what's going on here in Seattle I have just joined my 26 th band here. A 13 piece Funk-soul and Latin band, called "Type A" You can check them out at http://www.TypeA.com . I start rehearsing with them today. I have been busy recording, producing and performing with Omar Torrez, Michael Schrieve, Tumba Caliente(my band), Alma Villegas Quintet, and others here in the Pacific Northwest. I am also teaching and "training" some of my "grasshoppers" to be able to play "all styles", I have one student in particular that is coming along very fast in his learning to play, and I may have him down the line take my place on some gigs, cause there coming to me now in abundance and I know there will be a conflict sooner or later, with my gigs. I will let everyone know when my product hits the market......peace from the Pacific Northwest...."JC" Johnny Conga..... :D
