For those of you considering to buy a quality pair of bongos,if you're thinking of upgrading from what you have, consider "el bongo de Charlie Vega.Charlie is from Isabela Puerto Rico,he is a Christian, the best guy and an incredible craftsman when it comes to making bongos. It took Charlie just two weeks to make my set.Mine is made from P.Rican Cahoba (mahogany),it delivers an incredidle sound, its a thing of beauty and made to last a lifetime. His skins are the best I've seen, better than Pan Con Queso.Instead of buying mass produced Thailand crap, get yourself a pair that is completely hand made.Chalie's bongoces are used by El Gran Combo,Truco Y Zaperoco.Plena Libre,NYC bongoceros and by me, "el Cubiche de Little Havana".I don't get a commission from Charlie,I just want to share my satisfaction.Gracias a Caballobalo for hooking me up with Charlie.Sonerito, suena tu bongo'. This is my Candido Requena, sold by Solis music store in Havana. This baby is from the 50's,made from Cedro (cedar),macho 6",hembra 7".Very light in weight but delivers a powerful crispy sound from the macho and an incredible deep sound from the hembra. It sounds as good or better than any bongo out there, even Mongo's Vergara.Candido Requena was the bongocero for the Casino De La Playa orquestra, where Miguelito Valdes, the real MR. Babalu, sang in the 40's.Requena made both bongos and congas up until the early 60's. Saludos,Dario

Next is my JCR Cubano style. It's a solid one piece Cahoba,no staves.Macho 6.5",hembra 7.5".Incredible sound. My 1st wife bought it for me in 1984,when I passed the CPA exam.My friend Cali is not making bongos anymore,as he can't get the wood (Cahoba from the Dominican Republic). Saludos, Dario
