Does anybody have any experience / opinions about using a calf or goat skin on the bongos?

I've tried goat on a set before with the goal of using them for reggae, but could never get the sounds I was looking for, goat is challenging to mount on bongos in my experience as it doesn't take the tension well that is needed to get the tones, goat can obviously be mounted under great tension as it's done all the time on djembe's but doesn't seem to handle the bongo mounting hardware well. That being said, I have read that it is/was popular among some Cuban bongocero's and i have old recordings that seem to verify that. I have a kip head (which I believe is calf, correct me if I'm wrong) on a macho now and love it, it produces a sound as good in it's own way as the mule on my other set but not as dry and sharp.

Barrie.

In the leather industry, kip is young cow - it's from an animal older than a calf but not full grown.
