Heads must be tune evenly to avoid this , when selecting a head must also be cut even not one side thicker than the other this causes more pressure on one side than other and drum will warp. This can happen to any bongo, on stave bongos the disadvantage you will have that they will crack when this happens, The solid shell will hold up better under pressure.
Ernesto agrees & Adds, it is always a good practice to de tune your heads to a medium tom tom sounding tension to relieve the stress from the head & the shell. Guys with plastic heads think this is not needed since plastic wont stretch out like skins, but the constant tension on any wood shell will mold the shell to these tensions in time. Same is true of congas. Some times uneven tension warps the crown rims and the shells ! Any crown that is poorly designed ( most old style crowns are crude ) & built with the "V " saddles to narrow & allowing a wide space between the pull down " V "s create an area for the crowns to warp. ( Isla perc. designs are an example of poorly designed & constructed hard wares While Fat Congas, Volcano's & new California model Gon Bops are examples of strong rigid tuning system on Congas & Bongos, superior to Asian made designs that are adequate if not using thin metal / depending on models )
