My 31 Year Old JCR

Postby Omelenko1 » Mon Feb 01, 2010 11:33 pm

Recently refinished, new mule skin on macho JCR bongos from 1978. They don't make them like this anymore. Macho 6 3/4", hembra 9". Very high crisp sound on the macho with the new mule, the hembra sounds like a tumba. Unfortunately this Caoba wood is not available anymore. These are incredibly beautiful, awesome sounding, made to last 100 yrs. bongos. Cali Rivera at his best. SONIDO CRIMINAL!

Those are beautiful Dario. I am always keeping an eye out for gems like that here in the NY area.

This is the set Cali made me in 2008. 6.5" macho y 8.5" hembra....downsized a bit. The wood was from overseas...Isaac probably knows more about it than I do. The color is walnut-ish but I have to ask Cali details about the wood next time I see him. All he said then was that he imported from Vietnam/Asia when wood prices went through the roof. The sound is CRAZY...crisp and full of soul.

Not to go too much off topic: the congas below are the used JCR set (conga y tumba) I picked up last year. I had LP Galaxy's before these and there is no comparison in sound whatsoever...the JCR's murder the LP's. I'm going to bring them to Cali in the spring to have them cleaned up.

Thanks for the comments guys. Steven , mi hermanito chiquito, the P Rican Van Gogh of the skins. Caballoballo, just trying to keep up with your toys. PRDR, beautiful combination, them JCR tubs are to die for! I played a similar set in Cali's place when I was there last year. Cali is a dear friend, full of stories of NY glory years.

I was born in The Bronx - Grande Concourse & Burnside Ave. Like they say "You can take a boy out of The Bronx but you can never take The Bronx out of the boy." Although many of us are far from "home", we all have a special spot in our hearts for our roots. Well, it makes me feel great to see these fine treasures made in The Bronx.

In Ogden Ave in Da' Bronx, that's where my man Cali is at. Is a steep climb from Yankee Stadium to Ogden Ave, tough neighborhood, barrio de rumberos. You hear the sounds of Cali's cowbells on your way to Ogden.

Thanks. And I agree Dario....Cali's good people and I could sit there all day talking to him. Since I'm only 29, I feel blessed to be able to talk to someone who's been "in the game" for so long. He's a Met fan in enemy territory though.

And they don't call the Bx "El Condado de la Salsa" for nothing!
