Junior Tirado Bongos on Ebay.

Forum fully dedicated to the instrument

I'm glad Nelson replied the way he did. Junior Tirado, a proud son of Puerto Rico, one of the true crafstman along with Vergara, Pan Con Queso and Ismael. Some of your comments were a bit derrogatory, even from hermanos Boricuas in the forum. Junior instruments were/are played by the best: Mongo,Barretto,Mangual (father and sons), Milton Cardona, Frankie Malabe', Papo Pepin, Jerry Gonzalez and I know Paoli Mejia records with Junior congas and bongos, eventhough he is endorsed by LP.

They are good for everyday and constant use and will last a lifetime if properly taken care of (lubricated, regular head replacement). However, if thrown down from the stage and dropped, no instrument will last. If Mongo played Junior congas and Jose "Buyu" Mangual played Junior bongos, I rest my case.

Saludos,

Dario

No one gave Junior Tirado any disrespect.

I am glad these were real and that you would never sell a fake.
I think you got an excellent price on them.

Apologies if my speculation caused you any harm, I think it is
natural though, with internet trading the way it is.

Face to face is a different matter.

No, you lost my interest much earlier than that :)

No one but you could tell what you have bought or sold....the feedback is all over 90 days old and the details of your purchases are therefore not available to anyone else.

Dario says he knows you and that your brother is famous...good for you ....but if he hadn't said that on this forum no one would have been able to figure any of that out from your Ebay listing.

In a perfect world we could all trust each other without ever having met, but the sad fact of the matter is that people get screwed on Ebay all the time. Ask Isaac about the Mexican bongos he ended up buying from an unknown seller.

I am not doubting your integrity in any way....what I'm saying is that I personally would not be happy spending that kind of money on Ebay with ANYONE that I didn't have some background information on. I just don't think it's an ideal way to make a purchase of this sort. Dario vouched for you and like I said, that changes things.

That said, congratulations on the price. They are a beautiful set of bongos and deserve a high valuation.

Dario: I hope you're not saying that I disrespected Junior Tirado in any way. If you are, then read what I wrote again. I didn't, nor would I.

I don't think anybody disrespected, dissed or made derogatory comments about
Junior Tirado (RIP) a great drum maker no doubt. :)

Hello to all my fello Bongocero's.

Just my view.
As a Bongocero, I truly love and respect Bongos very much, and because of that, I do not own just one pair. At this point in my life, I only want the finest I can afford. Each one for a certain reason. One would be for jammin socially, the others for the wood types and design. (Cherry, Mahogany, Maple, and Oak) 4 lug, and or 5 lug. The artisan (Junior Tirado, Matthew Smith, Skin On Skin, and JCR.) For the pride of owership. So, If i'm going to play from day to day, I'd use the right bongo for that. For Recording what sound am looking for? What type wood Bongo will have the right sound for what i want to do? I'm sure you all know what I mean, by now. You drive your Pick-Up to the Beach, Drive your Mom to the Doctor in your Lincoln, and Drive your Honey to a club in your Ferrari. Each is better suited for the situation at hand. Jammin the finest bongos in the world at daily average Gigs, like LPs would be a sin. The finest Bongos are usually puchased for higher purposes, and used accordingly by those who have a real appreciation for that level of an instrument. But also make no mistake, The Junior's, Smith's, JCR's, ETC can also be used daily, with flying colors as well! But why do that? Unless you have to.

I'm amazed at the experience and wisdom on this forum! I've dabbled with some vintage Gon Bops congas and am in the process of selling some bongos. I really appreciate the beauty of hand-crafted vintage instruments but I sold (and am selling)because I found myself stressing over whether someone would steal my drums in between sets! I came to the conclusion that I would rather gig with decent quality drums that could be replaced fairly easily if stolen than burn a hole in my stomach worrying about the vintage tubs. Then I realized I didn't have the $ to own working drums _and_ collectible drums. Limited cash is the mother of invention <G>.

You may well say that again!
I don´t take my LP Generation I Bongos (from the 1970s)I bought for more than 250$
much outside, but a somewhat cheap(er!) set with decent skins.
The same goes for congas.
Still - that does NOT mean I don´t play the vintage bongos, it´s only that I am a tad more careful
with them than with other instruments.
I found myself stressing over whether someone would steal my drums in between sets!

So yes, that´s understandable - on the other hand you will want a decent sound, good projection etc. The
question is if you can get that with just any set of bongos... No, I know what you mean, why not take some Matadors
with mule skin - ain´t that bad

Mike, Wie geht es Ihnen? I agree with you & with Chapy. Lately depending where I be playing is going to be the set use to play. Sometimes you need to keep an eye on the stage specially during resting periods. If I am playing in small Clubs I will take either one of the 2 El Piernas, for private Parties, Moperc or CP but regardles of their price or vintage they all will be play . I am not saying in any way that I do not value my 2 El Piernas but they won't be that hard to buy or find again, the others Moperc & Cp are a little expensive & takes time to made them.

I ordered a set of Moperc "Custom Cubano" bongos a little over two weeks ago. The payment was sent from Chapel Hill, NC to QC, Canada Express International. Michel does not do online or over the phone payments. The bongos were mailed off 3 days ago and should be in my lap any day now.

Daniel...may I ask what you had to shell out for the Bongos? I took a look at them on the Moperc web site and they are really beautiful looking drums. I took the following info from their web site..." A must for percussion purists. Maple contruction and a cylindrical (versus conical) design endow these bongos with a truly remarkable projection. Another Moperc's innovation is to imbed the junction block in the shell, resulting in an extremely solid, efficient assembly and eliminating any possibility of splitting at the bolt-holes.".
Here is a direct link to their website bongo page. http://www.moperc.com/drums/bongos.php
Let us know how you like them when you get them ok?

prolly about 450. Michel will send you an extra skin and hoop for the macho. At least he did for me.

I've recently reskinned the hembra on my Moperc Salsa club with BC(Bill Confer) cowhide. Alittle thicker to get more resonance than the skin Michel uses. I'm not too fond of the original skin. it almost seems like its bleached, yet has a dark color. you cam see the white pigmentation in the skin, but not on the surface.

Michel's work is outstanding, they are buitl like a tank !! But be warned, it is heavy. I would say that Juniors are more player friendly with weight, but Mopercs bearing edge makes it to die for  And I mean in a good way.
The tonal differences is another thread entirely.

It is a 3 page thread, but you'll get the jist of it. I did reskin the hembra last week and am going to check it out tomorrow.
