Re: Salcero's new bongos.
It does need to be closely re-examined, not by a low res. jpg. If there's a problem
it should be resolved.
The lighter ones in the picture above posted by Leedy
were staved shells made of Poplar by Juan Figueroa, then refined and finished by JCR in the Bronx.
Most of Juan's were poplar wood, nice & light with a dry tone...not at all similar to Thai mass produced.
Barry of our group has had the same set for several years and can attest to their quality.
Franklin "Osisris" (he used to work for JCR ) still supplies shells to JCR also,
Not 100% sure, because I've been out of this for the past
2 years. But, all sound fantastic. If the shell was ever too thick, or the bearing
edges need attention, it goes back on the JCR lathe downstairs and gets fine tuned.
Caly outsourced shells alternatively to DR and Colombia as Leedy mentioned.
What was left out is that the shells were further lathed and refined at JCR,
otherwise they were ridiculously heavy.
The metal work, is not just a question of "slapping them on" but
each set of rims must be welded for a tight custom fit, no two identical.

ps. I've had a few inquiries about the bongo shell pictures I posted earlier.
Sorry if the post was misleading. The shells are being sold only as a lot
to a drum maker, not one set at a time.
