Oye Salsero, that glue line inside the hembra seems to be a crack that was repaired.
If what I see in the picture is in fact a crack you should know that brand spanking new
drums should not have cracks at all. Brand new is brand new as of no such defects as
cracks.

Leedy, the more I look at the hembra shell the more I see that this was a crack repair. The crack is clearly visible on the outer face of the shell as well. I thought I was getting a set of solid wood mahogany bongos from Cali but it seems they were either refurbished or cracked during the lathe processing and he had his wood worker glue it together and thought I wouldn't notice. Once I unpacked the drums and inspected them a red flag immediately popped in my head to ask about the repair. Having said that and the commentary so far this evening I'm will return the drums first thing Monday and tell him that I want what I paid for new solid shelled bongos with no defects. He knows I'm an amatuer percussionist but I know quality first hand. He will have to address this issue in order to maintain his quality reputation with the masses. I just hope he doesn't give a hard time about it. The drums you posted are similar but not quite as light. I don't want to scratch the shells since I will return them this Monday. I will post my results then. Hopefully this will be resolved in good fashion.

I have a future order for a set of black walnut bongos in progress with Jay Bereck. If Cali gives me the BS treatment I will let him know that I will never do business with his company ever again and warn future buyers to stay away from his bongos if this is the craftsmanship he puts out regualarly nowadays. It will be a shame he seems like a likable personable individual. I don't know why he trys to pull the wool over buyers eyes. Business must not be that hot nowadays. I will contact you if I'm going to purchase another solid shell set. Thank you.

I only have one thing to say about this situation, " Tremenda Mierda"

Sucks, take them back and demand a new set or cash back.

Salcero,

Return them bongos and get your money back. I would not do business with a vendor that ships me
damage goods when I suppose to receive brand new bongos. You already have an order in with
Jay for a set of bongos so get your money back from JCR. Good Luck.

Re: Salcero's new bongos.
It does need to be closely re-examined, not by a low res. jpg. If there's a problem
it should be resolved.

The lighter ones in the picture above posted by Leedy
were staved shells made of Poplar by Juan Figueroa, then refined and finished by JCR in the Bronx.
Most of Juan's were poplar wood, nice & light with a dry tone...not at all similar to Thai mass produced.
Barry of our group has had the same set for several years and can attest to their quality.
Franklin "Osisris" (he used to work for JCR ) still supplies shells to JCR also,
Not 100% sure, because I've been out of this for the past
2 years. But, all sound fantastic. If the shell was ever too thick, or the bearing
edges need attention, it goes back on the JCR lathe downstairs and gets fine tuned.
Caly outsourced shells alternatively to DR and Colombia as Leedy mentioned.
What was left out is that the shells were further lathed and refined at JCR,
otherwise they were ridiculously heavy.
The metal work, is not just a question of "slapping them on" but
each set of rims must be welded for a tight custom fit, no two identical.

ISAAC

ps. I've had a few inquiries about the bongo shell pictures I posted earlier.
Sorry if the post was misleading. The shells are being sold only as a lot
to a drum maker, not one set at a time.

Mr. Issac,
You mentioned you had solid wood shells in stock and the first pictures you posted were impressive. I see that the hardware was crafted at JCR company. Bearing in mind the issues I'm having with Cali I would like you to give me a price quote on these shells along with ways of shipping. I'm a firm believer of hands on purchasing. I like to see and feel what I will probably purchase. Are you located within the New York City area and if so can we meet somewhere to transact business? It seems that when I spoke with Cali this morning he insinuated that he sold me the bongos at a discount. This was never the case. I saw a pair he was selling for $200 when I initially walked into his place of business but immediately declined the sale. I told him exactly what I wanted and he said he would take care of the order. Upon mentioning the discovery of the cracked and repaired shells he shipped to me this is when he tried to tell me that what he sold me was discounted equipment. I immediately told him that his statement was not the truth and I wanted a brand new set, what I paid for. He told me "we'll see what we can do" and hung up on me. I will be at his place of business when he opens tommorrow. I will either get what I want or my money back. Let me give you my email address so that you can further inform me of the details of your shells. It is as follows: salsaconsandunga@gmail.com, shoot me an email today if you can. Thank you Issac I look forward to hearing from you. I want to keep open communication with Cali in case I need him to furnish me with the hard ware for the shells. Lets see how my meeting will develop tommorrow. Peace
