x-ray film

Forum fully dedicated to the instrument

I just mounted some x-ray that I got from someone on this board. It sounds great. Like night and day from the old head I had on there... I'm not from Cuba and haven't taught at any schools, but I know what a good macho sounds like, and x-ray definatley sounds awesome! I just wish I had more because it took me 3 tries to get it on right, and there are still afew things I would do differently.

Garvin, what mistakes did you make? I haven't done one in about 12 years and forgot how I did it. I'm expecting some in the mail, but still need more for some new bongos (with terrible heads)that I just got. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Buck

mounting xray film is not easy, its more difficult to get a clean mount (at least in my experience) than w/ natural skins.... I have film on my macho, and it sounds better than the lp plastic skin that was on there, but its not perfectly flush with the rim...does anyone have any tips?

For all you guys with the X-ray, it is a topic of discussion in another forum I am in, the Bongo Group, there are several instructions how to mount "placa" or X-ray..

this one is from Caballoballo, who also posts there

That is something I use to do during the 70s.

1-Cut the placa about 12 inches in diameter.
2-Set the placa on top of the Macho, put the hoop ring on top
and push it down about 1/2 inch. You need an extra set of hands to help.
3-Start to bend the placa around the hoop the same way you do with a
natural skin and use some adhesive(tape) to hold it on place at the
center.
4- Insert the placa under the crown and set it on top of the Macho
shell, use a set of lugs longer than the ones of the Bongó to shape
the placa.
5-After tighten, take it off and put some plastic tape around the hoop
to make a cushion to prevent the crown from braking the placa at
tunning time.Cut the extra the same way yo do with a natural skin.

That was the way I use to do it back then.

When I mounted the X-ray it took two tries to get it right the first time, I kind of thought it was easier than skin, but others might have different exepriences.

My bit of advice, is make sure to use the sharpest freaking knife you possibly can to trim it, (really really really sharp okay?)

also you can use scotch tape to hold the ends of the placa in place when getting the hoop, shell and placa together.

I know Caballoballo's instrcustions say to get someone to help, but I was able to do it by myself without any problems.

(Placa and x-ray are the same thing)

and one more thing, x-ray won't shrink or move like drying skin does, so before you trim it, tighten it up to the sound you want and make sure everything is where you want it.

I'm assuming an X-acto hobby knife would offer good control when cutting?

not if the bade is not new, use a brand new blade, not that same old blade you've cut all kinds with.

The "krinkles" and overlaps can be tough to cut through with x-ray.

I might be repeating myself but have a look here: http://www.congaplace.com/cgi-bin....l=gwoka

and tu cut the film, pull the excess of film with a pair of pliers or your fingers and use a box cutter.

;-)

Akdom, is there a reason you suggest a box cutter over an X-acto knife?

Yes there is..

the reason is because everyone has a box cutter home.....

BNB,glad you found the instructions useful. In another post by TwinsBongo he said that on the 1973 Lp
acquired from Omelenkó,whoever mounted the film use 2 films (placa) on the installation instead of 1. Humm..... that should have been a hell of a situation (pendejada cabrona) to install 2 placas in the place of 1.

Wow people the waiting is over,we are going to gig with the Band on Saturday Oct 13 at a place named El Balcón del Zumbador (Love Bird Balcony ) & also I worked last night as a Salsa Dj at a club, they want me to Dj again on Oct 31 Holloween which is a kaput night to be out.
