Remo Skins - Remo Skins for Meinl Free Ride

Forum fully dedicated to the instrument

Hi all,
Does anyone know what size Remo Fiberskyn head will fit on my 6-3/4" Meinl Free Ride wood bongo?

Meinl is not listed on Remos' charts, and they haven't responded to my emails; so I was wondering if anybody here has used one of these heads on a Meinl and what the part number is?

Thanks,
glj

Glj, I have not seen 1 that small. Are you sure is 6 3/4 ? If it is, the best thing you can do is to mount a good skin on that Macho. Either Cow or Mule (1/16 thick ) will do a good job & believe me,plastic sound plastic. Which Meinl do you have ?

Hi caballoballo,

i have the FWB200. on the Meinl's website its listed as a 6-3/4, and i've also measured bearing edge to bearing edge to confirm this. The reason i was looking for a synthetic head is because i like to use those drums as my beater drums which i play with outside quite a bit; so keeping the macho in tune can be challenging.

I have a set of Moperc's which have the cow skins, and you're right they definately do sound great.

I did some checking and Remo has a "mondo", in the NuSkyn type head that fits your 6 3/4. Here is the link...

http://www.remo.com/portal/products/3/12/116/264/specs.html

Wao! I have not noticed that Remo has expanded their "mondo or world percussion heads" so much. The head above is a NuSkyn Weatherking. (I left everything with them when NuSkyn was just one type...Now they have over 4 types that includes this...The only one with the size you are looking for and intended for bongos is this one). There are no other types..not even in Fyberskins.

I am aware various years ago when NuSkyn came out, Remo was making "non pro" or non standard sizes in heads for congas and bongos and there was a lower than 7 head for macho. Is obvous the model above is the second generation of that one I saw various years ago. For starters, this line of NuSkyn departs from the original "tucked" (with ring or just like natural heads look) style because this one has the "regular drum" ring like regular "trap drum" heads and is not tucked. The "film" the head is made of must be the same "technology" as the NuSkyns must of us have discussed here...

Going back to the head above, well, don't have the experience as you see...I imagine Remo took the consideration to make it good enough for high tuning in machos.... (We have talked here about NuSkyns and Fyberskins and the differences but never heard of this NuSkyn Weatherking. Nevertheless, NuSkyns tend to have an opaque sound with little overtones in comparison with the Fyberskins...Is a matter of likings...).

If you get one let us know. I hope this helps!

Saludos!

I have a set of LP Performer series I got through Musician's Friend a couple of years ago with 6 3/4 and 8 inch heads.
I put the Remo Tucked fiberskyns on them and they sound great. :D
The only place I could find them in stock was through the MF website.

Hi all

If you want plastic, mount an X ray film. It's free and gosh that sounds perfect.

There is a topic in here concerning X rays...
