This is my Youtube Video demonstrating the Lahej Rhythm from Southern Yemen. Laheji is a regional style in the same way you have a different feel in say Matanzas vs Havana or Santiago. There are a few ways to play it. Typically it's 2 drummers or more, Oud/Vocals and Chorus, with syncopated handclapping (like the Palmas in Flamenco). It's party music for weddings & festivals all over Yemen. I play this rhythm and other Yemeni styles with my Yemeni Ensemble in New York. We have some performances coming up so if any of you are in town I can let you know the dates. We'll be part of the Maqam Music Festival.
Isaac, that's a killer sound from those bongos! I go right past you several times a year on the NJ 'pike. If the timing is right I'd like to see you play. Its about time we met! Buck
