In my opinion, noboby cooks like this. He is been leading the pack for the last 35 yrs. Shoud have been the original FANIA All Stars bongocero from the begining, I know Roena doesn't cook like this. I don't think there is anyone that can hang with him. Speed is not everything, the way you converse, the "afinque" and the "saoco" is what ia all about. Pa' que respeten los timberos!

Roberto Roena is an exciting bongocero as can be seen in the footage from the Cheetah club but in most of the fania clips I've seen he uses sticks too much, a sound I'm not a fan of.
What's your favorite album or recording that showcases Dandy's bongo playing Dario ? Dandy seems to make great use of his left hand on the accented rim shot when he's playing, something Papa Killa did to terrific effect and a note that many newer players seems to neglect, on some of the older recording from Cuba it's often the most pronounced hit (falls on the 'and' of four).

There are two recordings in particular where Dandy shines, in reality he shines all the time, but on Ray Barretto's "The Message" and on "Que Viva La Musica", both on the Fania label. The cuts in particular "Te Traigo Mi Son" from "The Message" and "Cocinando" from "Que Viva La Musica", I must have listen to both over 200 times through the years, his solos on these two cuts are the tastiest I've heard. Eventhough Dandy loved the way Mongo, Armando and Manny Oquendo played bongo', in conversation he has amitted that "Yeyito" is probably his favorite, ofcourse his dad also.

I need to get 'the message', I love "Que Viva La Musica" probably one of my favorite albums although i must admit I bought it because of Barretto and have mostly focused my attention on the Conga parts, possibly even assuming it was Roena on bongo, now I can listen to it from a whole different perspective.

Nobody plays "in the pocket" like this and with so much "afinque" now a days. Everything now is speed, but laking conversation. Also his "campaneo" on the mambo is the tastiest of all. He is been the yardsitck when it comes to the instrument. Take a look.
