Mounted my second macho mule skin on my second set. Apparently I cut a little too much and now the skin is halfway from the top edge of the crown. It's been 3 days already that I mounted the skins. Would the skin slip out if I keep tuning it to get the sound we all like? You'll probably be asking yourselfs how the heck did he cut so much and not cut the playing area.
Lord bless

p.s. HAPPY BELATED EASTER TO ALL BONGOCEROS AND FAMILY !!!

Congrats on your mounting. You're a better man than I. I just cutting down an unused conga buffalo skin for use on my Aspire macho. Soaked it for 3 hrs. In all honesty I'd rather wrestle an alligator than try doing that again. Though it was a reasonaly successful mounting job, much more of a ball buster than I thought it would be.

CongaTik, you are helarious bro.......I did a little sweating myself but all fine. I think bongos are easier since you're dealing with a thinner skin.

3 hours soaking the skin for bongo? The most I ever soaked a skin was 1 hr even for a thick cow on hembra.
Nice trick: Put skin in a plastic bag, fill with water(cold) to cover, tie the bag. Make sure its covered. Wait 1 hr, viola !! Kinda like cooking food.
Something about using a bag is better than keeping it open to the air.
Each skin is different, but just see if you can roll it without much effort and it slides... bingo !! If it gives some hesitation, put it back in the water.

Hmmmm.. I do believe wrestling an alligator is easier for an old fart like me, though I think the bag-o-water is a great idea. (Hmm, that might work fine for alligators, too.
