So, I had my first bongo lesson with my teacher (we've only done congas so far), and he told me to tune up at the start of the lesson, with his help.
He has perfect pitch, and he said the fundamental note of my hembra was an Eb, but said that there's always multiple overtones and whatnot, so I shouldn't worry about knowing the exact note. He said to just search for a timbre for each drum that sounds best, and get used to that sound.
He also told me to tune down my macho after playing (I've still got stock rawhide heads on), but also by doing this I can get used to the tuning.

So, yeah. You guys were right. There CAN be a pitch for a drum, or at least a fundamental tone, but it's not clear to really matter. Just that they both sound good themselves and together.

Thanks guys!
