Not a fan of fiberglass bongos. Never have been. Prefer the sound of wood, same with synthetic skins. I prefer real skin, & wood for the sound I seek.
I play in the Latin pro scene. And seek the authentic sound.
I also see far too many 'beginner' players, both on conga & bongo, cheating themselves out of reality by using these fake skins.
Dont get me wrong, many top players use them also, however, not for my liking. I understand re places with high humidity etc and if those are the reasons then power to you. However it just aint my thing.

If you are at a tough gig and someone starts shooting, you may wish you had the LP Galaxy with kevlar lining.
Other than that - I agree with the 3 pros above.

Alright, I knew this was gonna happen
I know you guys love wood, JCR, SOS, Matt Smiths, Moperc........
But I'm not talking about wood bongos! If you HAD to get a fiberglass bongo which one would you get? Which one do you think is the best? I know wood is FAR superior in sound. But I want to know what is the best Fiberglass! I know there is ALOT of bongocero brothers here that have fiberglass and sometimes performs with them, but they won't admit it becuase they know they will be persecuted by the older cats on here LOL It's okay! you can come out of the fiberglass closet! Tell me why you have fiberglass and what skin do you use? And we already established that it's fiberglass not wood, and yes the sound is different!

VJBAROS: The Pearl signature series "bobby allende" bongo is pretty good considering that its a fiberglass bongo. it comes with fiberskyn heads and a pretty nice finish, its just really heavy tho (like all fiberglass).

I don't own fiberglass bongos and I haven't played on them yet, but I would like to try Bobby Allende, since I have his congas. Hell, if i got the chance i would try all the brands i could get...

I own a Leo Percussion bongo by Alberto De Hond who brought latin and salsa over to europe (and also the owner of Supercussion when it was a high end brand) and was the importer for Latin Percussion in that time. If im right these bongo's came out of the same factory befor Lp started to make their own bongo's in PP.

I have the original skin on the hembra and a Fiberskyn 3 on the macho.
Story of Alberto:
http://translate.google.nl/translate?js ... chema.htmlI used o have these in white as well:

This one was a little more heavier.

Alberto brought the Latin Percussion to Europe as a rep, inventor and friend of Martin and started the starter/midlevel Leo Percussion and the high class Supercussion (the bongos from that brand are unbranded Lp first generation bongo's) in the early 70's.
Though the Valencia looks so similar (probably produced a little better though) something I didnt know yet.
(always good to learn something new
