Leaving bongo's tune up

I was wondering if it's
ok to leave my bongos tuned up. I have synthetic head's on them. What's your guy's advice. Thank's.

Should beno problem with synthetic heads unless the shells are not
too delicate or even frail and brittle from age. Siam oak, for example, should take
the compression of tuned-up skins, of course other hard woods too.

It depends on the shells, hardware, climate, and what you mean by "up"

I don't ever recommend it (but I often do it).

But, I like the whole gestalt (feeling/mood) of tuning-detuning. For me its part of the whole process that gets me into and out of playing.

Well said, Psych1, this kind of foreplay really gets you into the mood..

I once owned a Matador bongó as a beater with Remo Fyberskin skin, and I really tuned
up high, but there was never any problem. But synthetic skins are not for me I realized,
so I stick with the good old tune and detune method.

Bongobilly I have had quite a number of drums and bongos with synthetic heads. I have played in cold as well as hot weather and I never detuned them. Once in a while I did have to tune up a little but never detuned. None of the other players that I know detune either and no problem. This is one of the reasons why many players switch to synthetic, so that they don’t have to go through the hastle of detuning.

One thing is for sure, for tone there is nothing like playing real skins .
