Hi everyone, I just got my hands on and old El Piernas Bongó,at least 14 years old. I got it from Dario. This Bongó which I call El Nene = Little boy has a very deep sound from the Hembra thick mule head. I got it in the mail last Friday and he went with me to the gig we played that night. Very powerfull sound and very heavy in weight 12.5
pounds, the wood looks like Mahogany & about 3/4" thick, strong and heavy hardware. The only thing I have change is the Macho head for a Fyberskin which really improved the sound from the Lp head it came with. Got rid of the Pearl Elite which IMHO was to me a waste of money.

"El Nene" must be sounding awesome with the Fyberskin,it never occured to me to put a Fyberskin on the macho when I had it.I have several bongos, including Mongo's Vergara, but when it comes to sound projection (sabor bien afincao') that vintage El Piernas takes the edge, the newer Piernas don't sound that tight. Is true it weights a bit, because the hardware is heavy and the lugs are 9/16" instead of the 1/2",but it makes up in sound. Is a big band bongo'. Saludos, Dario.

Bongo' Chemiya' ! :D
