I have many bongos,Skin on Skin,Junior Tirado,JCR and Mongo's Vergara's.When it comes to sound and projection,"El Piernas" that Caballoballo has leads the pack.I have another El Piernas that I gave to my son in law,but it doesn't sound like Caballoballo's.It must be that special Colombian wood or the fact "que estan bien curaos' " ,as they are about 20 yrs. old.Tremenda sonoridad y melodia. Here is a picture.Saludos, Dario :D

Dario,mi socio, espero todo esté bien contigo. Se asegura que el buen Vino mientras mas viejo mejor, ese refran le aplica muy bien al El Piernas.Yes,that El Piernas is something else, everytime I take it to play and they hear the sound, somebody has to say something like, hey, where you got that from ? Or if the have a chance to play it,you see them checking them all the way around and smiling ,I receive good compliments all the time. The combination of the mule skin on the hembra and Fyberskin on the macho really works, you may have to try that on the other fine ones that you have. What happen with the Charlie vega Bongó ? The only other thing I have done is to polish the bottom hoops and the only complain I may have is that he is a heavy s.o.b . I read your post about trading the Tumba and you were very specific about the type of equipment you want in exchange,no mass produce junk. Yesterday a friend received a set of Lp Classic Congas,he bought them directly from Lp, first they send him the wrong ones and he had to wait over 3 weeks to get a return authorization stamp, now one of the Congas he received yesterday is CRACK ,Where is the quality of the Lp manufacturing company ? I told him I was happy that he got a Crack one because before he bought them I show him various Congas from the hand made manufacturers in U.S,Canada, ect and he did not take my advice. Lo barato sale caro.

Vaya Franc, como estás ? I do own an Old Valje Bongó made by Lp but they were made in the U.S, I still play them for rehearsal,I can not complain about them, btw Martin Cohen is no longer the owner of Lp,he sold the Company to Kaman industries. I think the problem started when all those Companys moved to Asia where the labor cost is less, thinking about making more profit paying less. They sacrifice better craftsmanship from the artisans who use to work from them in their respected countries and we the consumers are the ones receiving second hand quality instruments. I learned that the hard way.I bought a set of Pearl Elite Bongos Last year,I changed the heads from natural to synthetic or a combination, changed the ugly comfort rims to traditional ones,I could not get it to sound to my taste. Result = Invested about $454,sold it for $200.

El Piernas is a heavy weight but the sound is the way the old Lps from the 70s sounded. I thought about to change the hardware,at least the bottoms to stainless steel Cuban style but that would have added more weight so I keeped the way it is.
Olsongo is selling a set of Lps from the 80s,they were made in New Jersey. I own 3 sets of Bongos, the old Valje,Moperc Salsa Bongó and El Piernas,If I have room I would buy that old Lp but 3 are too many. Where are you located here in the Island ? I am from Rio Grande.

caballoballo,
como estas , mi pana?? ojala que muy bien!! you know about 3 or 4 years back i bought a pair of Meinl Free Ride Wood Craft Bongos, 7'' and 9''. they had great sound and i loved them, but unfornutendly were stolen from my home. like you they also were heavy, but with great sound. now i only have two pairs of LP generation III bongos. one pair with nuskyn and the other pair with mule skins. i have cured them and i am real satisfied . at this time no need to upgrade them. what i want to upgrade are my timbales, but can't at this time cause of money wise. i have the ''matador style'' i would and will when the time permits get a pairs of ''marc quiñones timbales'' our friend Raymond have them and endorsed them.well, mi pana, will see you on the forum, take care!! my best and áche!! i am located in arecibo. your friend in rumba, franc :^)
