Aside from Mongo and Barretto, like my pal JC suggested, try to get some "son" oriented recordings.I remember many years ago I asked Orestes Vilato",one of my favorite bongoceros and definitely my favorite timbalero, what to listen to in order to develop bongo chops and he told me "listen to Arsenio with Papa Kila on bongo'.So try to get some Arsenio Rodriguez CDs,also Grupo Sierra Maestra,Duo Los Compadres,Johnny Pacheco,Son De La Loma.....Son based CDs,avoid charanga. Saludos, Dario

I suggest looking at database section of the BongoGroup at yahoo http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/TheBongoGroup/
where ~50 albums with great bongo solos are mentioned
Also http://www.bongomania.com/ has some suggestions
I also have found that Vieja Trova Santiaguera albums are good for playing along as their rhythm section is just claves and maracas, without bongo. They play classic sones and boleros.

since we going way back then without a doubt check out Duo Los Compadres.
Conjunto Modelo is also a must, they took over when Arsenio left to the U.S.
