Need Help with Bongo Repair!

Postby pcastag » Sat Sep 21, 2013 10:17 pm

OK, so the Jcr's had some issue, fortunately I came to a resolution with the seller that was fair for both parties. BUT! I need to try and fix these babies. It's a weird crack it starts at the cut out from the base where the counter hoop goes to the interior of the drum. You can't see the crack unless the drum is totally taken apart and you look at it form the top with no heads on. What I realized was that when Cali made the counter hoops they were too small, there are gouges in the bottom cut out caused by the brads from the hoop. I'm thinking the pressure caused these weird cracks. I'm guessing my best bet would be to inject glue and then clamp? There's only a couple of MM space to get the glue in. I've always been reluctant to buy a set of solid shell bongos specifically for this reason,. Anyways they are mine now so I'd like to fix them. Any ideas?

Here is one way to do it with backing soda and CA glue.Since the crack
is inside you do not have to worry too much about cosmetics, the main
thing is to seal and stop the crack from spreading.

Epoxy would do just about the same thing to that weird crack.
The stuff I always use is http://www.westsystem.com/ss/epoxy-resins-and-hardeners
You can sand it down as well once it has throughly dried.
I have used it successfully in the past and there will never be any structural issues
in those parts of the wood again I reckon.
You just have to be a bit careful, it is messy.
Peace & drum
