Wood Bongos - Wooden Boxes - Exploring new sounds with selfmade drums

Hello everybody!

I´ve just completed a set of ca. 7"+9" wooden boxes that is made of plywood (0.5") with a thin playing surface. Mounted on an old conga stand, it adds some wooden sound flavour to my set-up. They cut through quite well.
However, unless you are not Mr. Hard Hands, I can´t recommend playing them by hand
The sound is best when being played with medium to hard timpani mallets. The sound itself is somewhere between bongo, cata and something else.
And when I´m tired of playing those boxes, I can store my petty hardware (tuning wrenches etc.) in them :;):

Missed this while I was away I guess ... they look cool. Might try that myself - how thin was the top, 1/4 inch?

I´m rather in the metric club :;):
Well, the top is 4mm plywood and I wouldn´t use anything thicker because the sound would suffer. It´s hard on hands anyway, but still a cool effect instrument.

Do you plan to build one yourself?
