Rock on Tonio!

3 week turnaround is fantastic!

I am sure those will
be great bongos, the cut of those reminds
me a bit of old Valje bongos!

I myself am saving up for a set of Moperc's Conguero congas,
though I could really really see myself getting a set of those
custom cubano bongos too...

Incidently I have a set of bongos and a quinto ordered from
Resolutiion Drums, run by the son of the creator Valjes.
These come with a 6 month wait!!!

Tonio, :)

Hear, hear! Yup, 3 weeks turnaround time is great!

I've visited Moperc's website several times before and their drums were some of the ones that I was also really attracted to. Just like Resolution Drums, Mopercs have clean, understated and elegant design. I just absolutely love looking and can't help salivating :p at their maple Custom Cubano Series top-of-the-line congas!

What led me to decide in favor of Islas over Mopercs are: (1) Islas are made in the U.S.; (2) they're made by a Latino (IMO, who else can better know and replicate the authentic Cuban folkloric sound and soul?); (3) price and (4) present and future customer service (e.g. repairs, if necessary).

But, make no mistake about it, Mopercs are damm good-looking drums! :D

Thanks BNB, Manny.
3 weeks turnaround, but sending money orders takes about 5-10 as priority so, it'll be a month or so overall.

The main reason, I picked Moperc - for bongo, is that I beleive Michel is the only one that uses stainless steel. PLus the cylindrical shells - not conical.

Muy bueno for projection , yet warm/cutting tones. The reason I decided on the Slasa club, is after talking with Michel, he suggested them over the Cubano's-my initial inquiry. Maple is better for congas for a tonal warmness vs ash. With bongos its more about the projection you would want playing in a large band (Salsa etc.) The Maple wouldn't really make much of an advantage in that regard. So basically he said just pick which esthetics suit me. The tone is much the same.
Another reason is the lug design, much like old school, they are close to the shell, which makes good holding properties. Its a pain hlding the LP's with the lugs cutting into your legs even if you rotate them to a more comfortable position.
I'll be getting the bongos in Natural.

You can see a couple shells over to the right in the previous piccy.

This one shows that he carves the wood staves(Bata), no bending- much like Mario (Isla). But I'm torn for congas Moperc / Isla decision. It will probably be Isla , however.

Tonio, I have one Moperc Salsa Bongó,have been with me for about 2 years . Solid piece of art. Kind of heavy 11.5 pounds ,tremendous sound, superior quality, superior craftmanship. Talk to Michels so the hembra skin is thick and the macho is medium thick, make sure he does not mount the skin too far down. You have make a very good decision to buy from Moperc . The mass produce stuff can not compare to the Bongos made by Michel. I painted the hardware on black for a distintive look, my is Yellow. I got a gig this comming Friday and the Moperc is the 1 to play.

Tonio, :)

Great pictures of Moperc conga shells and carved bata staves! They're works of art created with a lot of love by French-Canadian Michel Ouellet and his crew of fine craftspersons.

I wonder of the conga staves are also carved.

Best of luck, :D

I'm going to be going with Moperc congas in a few months,
and maybe a set of bongos too, those cubano ones look soooo cool,

So why Moperc? Cause I know people with Isla's in the SF area,
but I know of no one with a set of Mopercs, I wanna be first :p

I totally intend on adding a set of Isla's for a second set at a later date,
the price and design is too cool to pass up!

I'm gonna buy as many drums as I can, I don't want more drum makers
to have to sell out like Akbar and Sol! :(

bongosnotbombs, you can not go wrong with Moperc. You will get a solid instrument from top to bottom. I wish we could find them at stores so people could compare them to the common stuff ( aka Thailand made ).

Caballoballo -yes I remember you saying had a set. I definatley will let Michel to mount the macho high for it will be cranked up!! I asked for medium, so it shuold be good.
Also I will be getting a extra skin for it.

RE: the weight 11.5 pounds, not bad, LP Gen II's are 16 or so pounds no? It must be the bottom bracket, that thing is thick.

Over the weekend I reskinned my LP Valje's macho with some cowhide. I was really getting sick of the fiberskyn. It shuold be dry by tonight, so I'll work it in until I get the Morperc !!

Hola Manny,
Not sure if the congas are solid/carved. I will be asking Michel once my bongo work in progress confirmation is received.
Consequently , I believe OZ has a whole set of Cubano congas. His description appears to be of ply, but I did not confirm that with him. IN either case, they are heavy in weight, so maybe they are solid.

BNB, so you're going for the Cubanos? Nice !!
Did you know our OZ here has a whole set.

If you are going to get them, do it before summer is over, Michel suggested if I were to order congas, do it before " the holdiays". I assume that being in St Adrien, it prolly gets cold a witches you know what. I wouldn't want to work under those conditions either :D

Its about 3 weeks turn around, so a whole set should take longer .
He has many shells ready to finish, so he doesn't have to worry about the drying process. Just lathe / sanding / finish and mounting of hardware and skins. The crude part of shaping/gluing is done with some "stock" available for work. Unless you want something "cutom" from his regular model setups

BTW, what did you think of the Isla's?
