Info/ID - Early Maywood LP & Cuban?

Postby PRDRconguero » Fri Jul 24, 2015 2:08 am

My father has these and wanted to pick some brains. The LP's appear to be very early ones, or the "garage bongo" as I like to refer to it as. I found a Facebook posting by Cohen with pic of a set with the same badge, stating that these type were among his first drums.

The second set, Cubans I believe, we know less about. Any information from you knowledgeable gents is appreciated.

Great bongos!! That is what we all like to see here.

One of the first LPs and the other is probably by Requena.

Vaya Boricua/ Dominicano I have the same bongos. The 1st one is an LP Maywood NJ, made in M. Cohen basement. Mine is from 1964 one of the first ones he made. I love mine, I put JCR skins on them and they sound awesome and are very light. The 2nd one is a Cuban Candido Requena, made in the 50's and sold at Solis Music Store in La Habana Vieja. Here R photos of mine. PONTE DURO BONGO"!!!!

Thank you very much for the info and compliments, guys.

Psych1:
I love seeing the gems everyone here has. These are my Pops' drums. Thanks!

Dario:
I happened to find a pic that Martin had put up in the Vintage Latin Percussion LP Facebook group (I believe you're familiar hehe). This particular badge and style appears to be from that period you mentioned. I have to confirm with my Pops, but yours and his have the aluminum rims that it appears Martin went to after the Cuban style bronze/steel rims. I didn't want to post that pic without permission.

Regarding the Cuban drums, his are solid shells, not staves. He thought they were Vergara's with Requena hardware...?

Nothing is currently for sale 8)
