My first bongos that deserved this name were Gon Bops Professional IB-3000. One day they split open. Now, for almost 30 years I play the Gon Bops Walnut model IBWL-3014 with 5 screws on the large (9") hembra and 4 screws on the small (7") macho. Hard to think of anything clearly better. 2 JCR bells of different sizes and 2 LP bells (which I seldom use).

Before that I once had an obscure pair of Brazilian bongos sold by LP. The bodies were made from dark wood with a thick layer of lacquer. They were lengthy but had a small diameter, nice looking but unusable in a traditional context. Does anybody remember those?

Today I use a medium-thick deer skin on the hembra and a thin horse (- so they said! -) skin on the macho, but I have also gone through my "thick skins period", and sometimes I am tempted to change back to that sound. What are everybody's preferences concerning skin thickness for bongos, and why?

I have a set of Poplar JCR's, regular macho and 9 in hembre, I believe one of only two pairs made, correct me if I'm wrong Isaac, and a set of timba bongo with the bigger hembre, the JCR's have mule on both, the timbas have a fat conga kip on the macho and a thick bleached steer from Ralph Flores on the hembre. I love them both, they have distinctly different sounds, the JCR's I prefer for Afro- Cuban, salsa as they are very tight and dry sounding and the timbas for Funk and contemporary playing.

My first pro set was some early 80's Valjes............they were natural and sounded great but finnally decided to get a set to match my vintage Gon Bops...went with TIMBA. Their really quality with Kip heads but still need a set that really pops...I like JRC and hope to get a pair soon

The timba are fantastic bongos, get a nice jcr mule or thin kip on the macho and a thick cow on the hembre and they will pop all you want, the kip that came with mine from timba was OK quality, but too thick and heavy to get too bright.
