I was going over a 1975 Eddie Harris album called "Is it in". A review site states that "tacky-sounding electric bongos" were used.

No idea. Maybe an early drum machine, as you said.

I've got an LP of David Liebman from the same era, with Patato Valdés playing "congas and electric congas", and couldn't notice where the congas were "electric" or not...
