I recently moved from a back-to-the-land community (27 years), where that type of "knowledge" was regularly heard on the public radio station. :p Although, it was more along the lines of the hippie-lunatic fringe/paranoid conspiracy theory/UFO-kind of thing.

It’s interesting, there’s an Oyá (Yoruba) song with the Moslem greeting "sala saleko maleku salam" in it. There’s also a Cuban-Congolese song or two with that phrase. I wonder if these phrases came into African songs via Moslem slave traders?

I think many of the slaves brought over were muslim. I'm pretty sure he ancient empires of mali and songhai were muslim empires.

Yeah, but as far as I know, the Congolese and Yoruba of the 1700's-1800's were not.

I don't really know, but I'm sure once they got to the Amerca's they had contact with muslim slaves from other parts of Africa.

Salem Massachusetts did not have a slave population.
There is absolutely NO concrete evidence linking to olmecs to ANY african tribe. The idea that the stone head carvings the olmecs made "looked" african because of their large noses is junk science, and another example of rascist ideas about African people.

That "archeologist" appeared on the Art Bell radio show. For some that adds credibility, for me it has the opposite effect. I don't disagree that those Olmec faces have "African-looking" characteristics. What that means though is nor clear. Perhaps if I put on my tinfoil hat I will understand.

The Olmec figures are representations of child Gods and their phenotypic features are consistent with their Olmec bloodline. There is NOTHING African about them whatsoever.
Now I promise to stop being humorous when someone comes up with something intellegent or serious to say. And F.Y.I,, Dr. Ivan Van Sertima was one of my professors at Rutgers and I'm quite familiar with his work. Now he had a good sense of humor!!!!!

Last I checked this was the history forum. What started out with some decent discussions has ended up with arguments on superstition, pseudo-science, fiction, and outright bs.
The claims that the Olmecas were of African ancestry simply because they carved some stone heads that had wide noses are absurd. So I guess dolphins are fish because they somehow look like fish right?
And UFOs? Please! Enough of this junk.
