Iya Muffling

Hi,
I have a Toca Iya, and the Inu has a SERIOUS ring to it. I know people advise using clay to make a muffle
but can I do the same thing with tape? Should I try an "0" pattern on the head or a "Dot" in the middle?
How does one get rid of the ring on the bata

Thanks

G

I would not recommend tape. The easiest thing that I have found is to go to an arts/crafts store and get some modeling clay (also called plasticine). This is a synthetic clay that will never dry out or go bad and you can get a few pounds of it for about $10 (which is more then enough). Just work it into a ball about the size of a golf ball to warm it up and then press it on to the head of the drum. get it flattened out to about the thickness of 1/8" and then add or remove some depending on how muffled you want the drum.

Or if you want to go the traditional route, mix Clay with Rosin and Castor Oil and do the same.
