Advice on buying timbales?

Forum fully dedicated to the instrument

Hi all,

Got my timbales today - very excited! After musing on the Meinl Marathons for ages, I went to another drum shop and found a secondhand set of LP Tito Puentes for slightly less money, and with a jam block and mambo bell. The Tito's have got an amazing sound. I think they're steel, or stainless, I'm not sure, and they're a 14/15" inch combination.

I was pretty lucky to get them, apparently a fairly reputable percussionist traded in a heap of gear a few days ago.

Thanks again for all of your helpful advice. I'll look forward to talking timbales soon. :)

Congratulations on your find of LP Tito Puente. They are stainless steel and if you take care of them will last you a lifetime.

Are they the previous generation or the current generation? (The prevoius generation has the "flares" or "folded metal" on the bottom of the paila. The new generation does not. The previous generation are a great set of timbales. The stainless steel was more solid and their cascara great without overtones like the new generation has. Personally, I am looking for a set of the previous generation but nobody wants to sell them to me. By the way, there are three geneations of LP Tito Puentes. I am talking about the second and third).

Enjoy them.

I think my timbales are the previous generation, by your description, Raymond. They have flared metal at the bottom of the shell, and seem to be made of a quite heavy duty stainless steel.

I'm very excited and pleased to have found them. I've been playing them madly over the last couple of days, and I can't believe the wonderful attack and cut they have.

thanks again,
Chelsea

Has anyone tried the TOCA Brass 14" & 15" timbales?
I play the steel Ludwigs from the 70s now. but would
like to try the brass?

The best advice I can give you is HIT THOSE BAD BOYS YOUR SELF! Each Timbal has it's own character, it's character has to move you, then you'll know the one to get. Try Guitar Center, they usually have a variety.

I have a vintage set of SLINGERLAND TIMBALES & Stand 13"/14" for sale.
Traditional rims modeled after the Leedy Noro Morales model.
These are very heavy duty chromed steel that have broad booming range and
a lot of power similar to the JCR Timbales I usually sell.
Recently reheaded with new Remo Weatherking Diplomat heads. Shells are in very fine condition for their age, with a few minor scratches. The lugs, and tension rods are in near perfect. They both have the rectangular Niles, Illinois Slingerland Black and Silver badges with these serial numbers engraved. The serial #s are 052387 & 052391

Any interested please contact me.
