Hola CongaForum, hope all is well! I'm trying to identify who is the timbalero on the tune "Cuero Na'ma" featured on José Mangual Jr. album titled Tribute to Chano Pozo?

Good luck with that , especially the intro when he does all thoses clicks on the rim

THOSE CLIKS you hear are Jimmy hitting his sticks together, not hitting the rim. Tito Puente had started that in his playing many years before. Which is the school Jimmy comes from. My best Jimmy Sabater solo is "Bailadores" with the Joe Cuba Sextet.....punto final!....smokin!.....JC JOHNNY CONGA...

hi all ,

I like this topic since I also had in mind to transcribe this song in a while which is for now not and easy task for me.
Regarding the intro section , I cant figure out the count of it ...
is it 4/4 , cause I count and the rolls and feeling do not align with my counting ...
can any one try to write here just a few first bars of the intro ?

Regarding the body of the song it more easy since the timbales is accompanied by the organ and other instruments and there is the feel of clave.

I also want to ask those with the transcribing expireince what is your method of doing it ?
I for examples thought of listening to the song with a player that can play the song in slower tempo and even try to analyze the wave form to see where the bits fall at , even though I havent done either.

And Johnny , by listenning alone , if u had not told me , i couldnt notice whether the clicks are sticks or rim-clicks , it sound close , no ?

JC, can you please tell me the title for the Joe Cuba Sextet album? The one with "Bailadores" on it?

Vaya Jorge ..That IS the name of the record-"Bailadores" with the Joe Cuba Sextet. Ever hear Joe Cubas X rated album-
Puddadin paquetero?......it's a gas, Joe doing the spoken word about "El Barrio".....and a couple of 'mad jams' on it with conga and timbale solos.....At your Service.. JC JOHNNY CONGA

Pini, there are no tricks! Just listen to it over and over. If you want, give a try to one of those Sabine "Backtrack Guitar Riffs Decoder" in order to get it in half speed. Hope this helps!

Jorge ,

I have no problem with the "body" of the song ...
but the intro ... i cant figure out its counting ..?!
I try 12341234... but the timbales does not really align with my countings... could u write me just the first few bars , if u have them.

and another question i had in mind... after the intro is finished the piano starts in. I have noticed that he doesn't start with the begining of the bar .. so i guess he also counts the bars since the timbalero started playing... do you follow what i am saying ? I mean that the whole counting doesnt change and also doesnt the tempo , but still i dont get the feel... so tell me what u think..

Hi Pini, unfortunately the version of Cuero Na'ma that I do have at hand right now it's in a cassette tape someone gave me of "Classic Timbales Solos". What I have on tape is the actual timbal solo, no intro or body of the tune at all!
