Matador timbales with Mexican flag colors

Postby Mike » Tue May 26, 2009 9:22 am

I have recently seen two sets of Matador timbales with red, white and green stripes at German ebay.
What are those models, I wondered, have never come across them. Here is what they look like, first a set for 180 Euros

And here is another set that went off at 130 Euros

So, for sheer curiosity, I would like to know what quality they are, steel shells I presume, or what they sound like.

Thanks for the input.
One of the two sellers called it a "Raul Rekow"-Model,
but I think what he meant was a "Karl Perazzo"-model I guess. On Karl´s myspace site you can spot these timbales: http://www.myspace.com/karlperazzo
Dunno, but his name sounds Italian indeed, hence maybe the colors of this (somewhat older?) Matador timbales set.
Of course he is an American artist though.

Karl Perazo series, from a few years ago, Matador brought this line out when Santana had a string of hits back in the charts after some absence.

A-ha, thanks for the info, now it´s official :D I wonder how durable this color varnish is...
BTW it is interesting that Karl Perazzo´s age is 101 years as it reads on the myspace site

EDIT: In what way are Matador timbales different to up-price LP Timbales?
There is constant praise for the quality of Matador congas as far as construction and sound,
preferably after a skin upgrade is concerned (I can only agree there).
Is it just the same with Matador timbales or are they inferior in sound and contsruction?
They look the same as LP anyway... Any experience there?

major difference one from other gage of metal, inner plates, stand, sounds different steel sounds dry and loud .brass gives you a warm sound in lp,matador rings a bit, mounts of timbales also different one cast iron the other lp made of steel.

Alright, thanks for the update there.
Ringiness could be fought by mounting better skins than the Matador factory skins I guess,
but anyway I do see there appears to be a difference in quality of LP compared to Matador timbales.
Again, it is totally different with congas: You would not notice a difference at all between old Matador and LP classic congas.

Mike,

I know, it indeed looks funny! But, as you probably already know, that's what happens when someone doesn't want to reveal his true age on MySpace. He/she selects the oldest year for his birth year when he configures his account.

Well, the Italian flag looks the same, yes.
I just dont know if Karl Perazzo is Italian, even if his name sounds Italian,
that does not necessarily mean the colors on that timbales set are not
meant to be Mexican :?

Didn´t know about that - so the shell colors REALLY make sense alright :)
