Yes it is :P
I tapped up some sticks to give that a try. Quite interesting feel, but it does give a more damped sound on bells.

I electrictly sanded my Lp salsa cowbells at the shoulders where theres extra heavy metal folded, and it open up the sound making it less choked and bright ala JCR but with better definition.

What about a Johny Pacheco bell? Do you have one? Did not he make some bells from some alloy metal used to make aircrafts or something. I heard they were good sounding bells too. I wonder how many of them horse carriages in NYC lost their cowbells to percussionists…..

If I am not mistaken some of them old bells were not meant to be mounted on the timbales stand. Did they lay on the head of the timbales attached to a rubber ball or something??? You may know this. I always wonder when the bongoceros started using bells in NYC. I have listened to some recordings in the early to mid 50’s ( TP, Machito, etc) and I am quite sure the bongocero plays the bongo through-out the whole song. I am thinking somewhere in the late 50’s it became the norm for the bongcero to switch to the bell but I really do not know for sure.

I know about Jose Mangual Sr. In my mind big band deluxe bongocero. I have to mention Uba Nieto big band deluxe timbalero as well.
You have to know the history of the music and the instrument before you start playing. Pay respect to those that came way before us and
paved the way. Love that second link of Machito's big band way back in the day.

Them bells are pretty old. Nice collection. Thanks for the information, pictures and links.

Mongo always metioned a black Cuban timbalero named Montesino. According to Mongo, Montesino was the mentor of the likes of Tito Puente, Humberto Morales, Ubaldo Nieto, Manny Oquendo, Lil' Ray..... I once asked Oquendo about Montesino and he told me that Montesino lived in El Barrio and tought a lot of the young guys of the day, including him. Montesino showed them the "baqueteo", how to play danzon and the proper bell pattern for charanga and mambo. Carlos Montesino, a name you never hear and not many people know about.
