I think "cross stick" is an alternative term. I think there's a variety of names for this technique. It sounds a little confusing to me, though. What the stick actually crosses is the drum rim. There's another technique called "stick shot" or "stick-over-stick", where you strike the stick in the other hand that is resting with its tip on the head. Swing and Bop drummers used it a lot. There the stick "crosses" the other stick. The "rim click" imitates the clave or wood sound and is also used as an equivalent of the conga slap on a timbal or a snare drum. It is featured in Bossa Nova, and it is also a integral element of the baqueteo.
