Youre right leedy, modern timbales are way thicker especially those traditional steel ribbed models tocas and tycoons...super annoying high pitched sound lacking body and tone.
I have a green label palisades tito puentes they are not thick compare to the new models but the shells are solid and compact and are more musical , the modern tito puentes models are thicker and loud and built like a tank i admit it i use them frecuently because the hardware is solid,,, old and new tito puentes are made out of stainless steel which have a more dryer sound than steel.

I own 2 green label brass and s.steel tito puentes
2 modern brass and s steel tito puentes
2 modern brass and s steel thunder tito puente
Meinl Luis conte brass
2 jcr timbales and timbalones.
Remo valencia.

I used to have the marc quinones steel, toca classic brass, black/gold label tito puente, brass generic.
