Alternative Hembra Heads

Postby bengon » Fri Jul 20, 2012 4:33 pm

I normally like to use Remo's coated ambassadors on both macho and hembra; to me they sound very natural and warm. However, I've been thinking about experimenting with different hembra heads.

Has anybody tried using hydraulic heads on the hembra? I'm wondering what sort of sound it would bring. I'm thinking it would bring more low end, but you would lose out on some of the subtleties you can get- particularly when playing sobado. Perhaps it would be best to just bite the bullet and add a floor tom to the setup.

I have a 14" and 13" brass set and right now on the 14" I
have Evans G2 clear. It does give me more lower end and
still retain timbal subtleties. I do not tune my timbales too
high anyway, specially the hembra.

I once owned a Karl Perazzo Timbales (by Matador)
and the Aquarian skin I mounted on the hembra
gave a good, bassy punch. It was an Aquarian Performance II Clear Dot.
But like you suspected, bengon, I lost some of the tone quality of a Remo
Ambassador when playing that skin. Too thick as well.

CanĀ“t say I liked it that much. I sold the whole set anyway,
and have remained happy with my 1980s Afro timbales.
Peace & drum
