Our big gig was last Saturday. We added Jeff, and old friend who drove up from Oklahoma just to join us!! He had two friends from Ft. Collins that joined our Coro, and just went over the music twice before the show.. That was really a big help! Ritz was over his sickness and showed up.. So with our 11 members and drums all on a small stage, it was definitely a challenge!
We had the most awesome crowd ever! Every other woman was intensely gorgeous, and most of them danced,, a lot! Everyone in the band had a fabulous time,, and Scott who is really "persnikity" about most things said, "That's the best Bamboche gig, pretty much EVER". He's been in it more than 20 years.
I didn't get the whole show recorded, but most of the first half on minidisc by our sound lady that evening. We only had one microphone, and it was off half the time.
Here are a few mp3 sound files. They aren't through Youtube or any other service, so you can just download it.. Obviously, don't put it out there somewhere else please! But feel free to burn it to disc and listen to your heart's content.
For those of you perusing these, go ahead and comment, but we are quite aware of any "non-traditional" things, like mixing congas and bata, and some other stylistic decisions about the lead Iyesa drum, some of our non-traditional solos, etc.

Is that Scott Parker Mast as well? I know a lot of those folks!

I just saw Scott in Michigan last summer. Had him come and give me a lesson when he was up North. That's a great group! Good work!

I opened for the Motet a while back as well and played in a band with a guy who used to live with Jans and Scott M. Small world.

Hi Garvin!
Thanks! Yeah that's Scott, and of course Daddy Dave singing and playing the Tumba on the Rumbas, I'm on the shaker, then the Tumba on Abakua. You probably know Rapa on quinto as well. Eric's playing Segundo on the vid.
Yes, I loved the Motet when Jans and Scott M. were with them!
Much smaller world now!!
Do you ever pass through Boulder any more? If so, IM me!

Small movie clip of me playing with school choir a few weeks ago. Can you tell what folkloric rhythm I'm playing?
http://mrcrowder.us/cong/ch11.mov

FYI, it's a .mov file, so if you're a PC user you'll probably need quicktime player. Sorry, I won't put it up on Youtube as it's kids from my school, and just can't afford repercussions.

Photos from 09 Humboldt trip

Postby windhorse » Mon Aug 10, 2009 7:50 pm

Humboldt 09!!

Notes:
The beach party was broken up by cops for the first time in 14 years!! Bizzare! I was playing shaker on a really cooking Columbia when the cops came.
Didn't even phase us! We just took down camp, and moved the party to Ray's room!
We went to three redwood groves while there..
I hung out with Mark and James - from our list - for most of the time. James had a few other buddies from the bay area - John, Brandon, and Gary.
My Friend and bata teacher from from Colorado, Thom was also there.
Other buddies and friends were Joy, Karl Lembke, Manny, Mike, Abby, Bobby, and Jorgé from this list..

Roman floored us with his amazing ability to play really softly, but when the montuno raises and energy is called for, he breaks out and just sends huge thick music from all parts of the instrument!

One funny story is,, when we were in Song class one day, Tan was sitting next to me. I just happened to see how he was writing down the percussion parts. I said, "hey, that's how we write in our group!" I thought it was significant since I really haven't seen many people use a combined Western form with above staff meaning left hand, and below is right. Turns out he learned how to write from "some guy's website" where they show how to do it that way.. It was mine! Ha!
BTW, Tan made a carry case that is probably the most amazing conga case I've EVER seen! Hopefully, he'll join here and post somewhere in the forum.
